Should You Read "Returned by the King"? My Honest Thoughts - Manhwa Review
The story begins in a world where everyone's worth is decided by their rank of skills. The world changed when the abyss came, it is a comepelte different dimension where monsters live. As abyss appeared people started to develop supernatural powers, people who has power began to enter the abyss and defeat monsters. Basically people's worth is determined through their awakened rank not their hard work.
The protagonist is a 35 year old guy who's power is unawakened, ever since he was born he has been bullied and became an orphanage. His name is Taehyeon, just because he has no powers he got hired by the awakens as a pack bearer to collect the trophies. He has been living through this his whole life and he is still struggling. The teammates he got in the abyss with are all dead by a sss rank monster who suddenly appeared and it almost killed Taehyeon but then time got frozen.
A mysterious being calling itself “the King” appeared and he takes Taehyeon as his chosen one because he is impressed by Taehyeon's willpower and tenacity. The King decided to grant Taehyeon some of his power which is called gluttony, it was unbelievable for Taehyeon but when he closed his eyes and opened he saw a guy was beating him up and it was someone who used to bully him in his high school life and Taehyeon realized The King gave Taehyeon a second chance at life.
At first he was upset that he has to go through all of it again but then he realized that he's now awakened and he will lead a different life this time with his new powers. This time Taehyeon is armed with Gluttony, his skill will allow him to block attacks and absorb the skills of his opponents which means he can steal others abilities.
However, this is not my first time reading this kind of trope where the protagonist got granted some special power which makes him overpowered. But there are few things differently in this manhwa, first of all the protagonist gets a second life chance and he is reliving his life from high school.
Second is that the protagonist can steal others powers and use them, like the ones I have read so far there they only level up and earns a new skill but in this one the protagonist absorbs the power of his opponent which is more scarier.
Like he will be way too overpowered. I really want to see his journey gradually. I am just wandering if The King is a nice being, he did help Taehyeon but I think it's for his own benefits. So, maybe The King in the future will have a conflict with Taehyeon.
Sometimes it felt like I am reading an animation because the artstyle is very fine. I have no single complaints about it, maybe one day they can make it an anime. I will watch it for sure.
The fighting scenes are more incredible than the normal scenes because then you get to see the phenomenal art. It is decent enough to keep the readers invested.
It’s an ongoing manhwa, they post regularly on every Saturday on webtoon, so you will find a new chapter, there are already 98 chapters. I am too excited and waiting for it to complete.
I am sure people will love this manhwa because there's no exaggerated complexity or nothing deep but they are giving a satisfying moments of power such as small battles and victories, betrayals and friendship. This manhwa does not require too much to follow, so it's quite enjoyable and has uniqueness in it's own way.
I know the story is predictable but still I will say you should give it a chance. If you're looking for psychological complexity or strong character growth of the protagonist then this may feel light to you.
But if you want to see deep character growth, more originality and well developed side characters then this manhwa is not for you. There will be certain scenes which is repetitive. This is my personal opinion.
It's not going to be a mind-blowing manhwa but still it's good for the fantasy lovers. A protagonist who is overpowered and no one can beat him that sounds really good to me, I will definitely love this type of stories.
I have watched the anime "Solo Leveling" after that I have been searching for a similar trope like that and I have found many already so, I will be reading all of them one by one. If you're not into violence then better ignore this manhwa.
I will suggest everyone to give it a try and let me know in the comment section if you have read this kind of stories or not, also feel free to reccomend me a manhwa similar to this.
