The Forbidden River by Susanne Goga, mystery, ghosts and a cursed river. (ENG/ESP)
Good morning book lovers, how are you? Today I want to review a book that I found at a flea market and which I was very happy with, I was immediately fascinated by the setting and the plot. We are in the early twentieth century in Surrey in the magnificent English countryside, I love this historical setting from the end of 1800 to the mid-1900 especially in England. The book tells the story of a German governess Charlotte who flees her homeland because of a scandal to work in England, she is a very qualified governess and loves her job. Upon her arrival in England she meets the little girl she will have to look after, little Emily, daughter of a widower who lost her mother in obscure circumstances who drowned in the river near their estate. Meanwhile in London there is a man Ashdown also a widower who is a much loved journalist of theatre reviews and who begins to investigate what seems to be a fashion in wealthy London, the séances and mediums, many of whom after his investigations reveal themselves to be charlatans, but Ashdown slowly becomes a much appreciated expert of the occult.
Charlotte, on the other hand, struggles a little to fit into her new family, Emily is an intelligent and good child but suffers from recurring nightmares and her father is a distant, gruff individual and keeps a tight lid on his wife's death, a death over which a strange mystery hovers. Charlotte sleeps in her late wife's room and begins to hear strange noises and a sort of presence, Emily gets worse and claims to speak and see her dead mother, so they decide to turn to the London occult expert, Ashdown. From here the plot of the book thickens between thriller, mystery and ghosts, the book manages to be truly engaging, it makes you enter its dark and scary atmospheres. Reading it you will be transported to the barren English land between superstitions, ghosts and mysteries. A truly enjoyable book for those who love the mystery genre and dark atmospheres.

Flea markets are an amazing way to find good deals on books, I love them!
Especially in Italy where there's not as much of a culture around used book stores outside of Libraccio, they are a very interesting alternative to retail stores.
You know? Strangely the title sounds so Indonesian. If it were translated it will be like Mystery in Chalk Hill. The book seems hauntingly beautiful and something I definitely would read if I have more time hehe.
Yes in italiano too it's mystery of Clark hill well it's Il Mistero di Clark Hill but I read that the Deutsch version and the English version are titled forbidden rivers.
