Rarely has it happened to me that among so many anime on the air, only one has fascinated me as much as this one we are going to talk about. In the past season it has already happened to me with an anime of the romance genre (as is the recent case of Honey Lemon Soda), but as for the mystery genre I was not so hopeful with the recent premises that have been coming out... or at least I thought so until I saw Tasokare Hotel. An anime that manages to seamlessly blend mystery with the supernatural, making it even more interesting than other anime in the same genre (as was the case with Detective Doctor). It is true that mystery is something that is not as commercial in this industry, at least not as much as other genres such as action, fantasy or romance. That is why there are very few adaptations that attract attention or manage to stand out from the rest. This makes that works like the one I bring you today remain in oblivion as hidden gems that nobody gets to know, despite how excellently made they are. What surprises me about this particular anime is its origin, being actually an animated adaptation of a mobile game with a million downloads.

Muy pocas veces me ha sucedido que de entre tantos animes en emisión, solo uno me haya fascinado tanto como lo ha hecho este del que estaremos hablando. En la temporada pasada ya me ha sucedido con un anime del género de romance (como es el caso reciente de Honey Lemon Soda), pero en cuanto al género del misterio no tenía tantas esperanzas con las recientes premisas que han estado saliendo… o al menos eso creí hasta que ví Tasokare Hotel. Un anime que consigue mezclar de forma perfecta el misterio con lo sobrenatural, haciéndolo incluso más interesante que otros animes de su mismo género (como lo fue el caso de la Doctora Detective). Es cierto que el misterio es algo que no es tan comercial en esta industria, al menos no tanto como otros géneros como la acción, la fantasía o el romance. Es por eso que son muy pocas las adaptaciones que llaman la atención o logran destacarse de los demás. Esto hace que obras como la que les traigo hoy se queden en el olvido como joyas escondidas que nadie llega a conocer, a pesar de lo excelentemente hechas que están. Lo que me sorprende de este anime en particular es su origen, siendo realmente una adaptación animada de un juego para móviles con un millón de descargas.

While Neko gets to do her job at first, as she welcomes new visitors each time and helps them remember who they are, she learns how some have been killed, others have suffered from tragic accidents, and more than one is even dead. In this hotel, visitors who remember who they are and what has happened to them in life have the option of being able to come back to life or leave forever if they have passed away. We can also notice how almost all visitors who arrive have their heads shaped like something that represents them or that they like (a letter, a flower, a toy or a musical instrument). In this anime we will meet all kinds of people who will arrive at this hotel; young people, adults, professionals, celebrities and even serial killers. This is how we will see the young Neko discover all the mysteries and secrets that this hotel and its members have, just as she will do with its visitors.

This is the first time I've seen an anime of this style, to be honest. I didn't expect it to be so fascinating and interesting at the same time thanks to the different mysteries and the way they are solved in each episode. But what fascinates me the most is the way in which the characters are developed, the case being applicable to almost everyone, not only to the protagonist, but also to the hotel staff members as well as its visitors. The theme of a story made up of different short stories is something that until recently did not catch my attention, but as this series manages to mix the supernatural and the theme of deaths then I became curious. And it is the same curiosity to know the reason why each person came to this place that made me hooked from beginning to end with this anime of only 12 episodes. And not only is that, but the different personalities the characters have, the problems they face and the lessons one learns from each of their stories are more than enough reasons for anyone reading this to go watch it in one sitting. Even when it comes to strong or sensitive topics such as murder or bullying they treat them with their respective level of seriousness and drama that they deserve. I like that a work like this has such an enjoyable way of telling a story and developing it without getting lost or spreading itself too thin unnecessarily.

Ahora, hablemos de la historia que nos cuentan en este anime. Luego de lo que les mencioné arriba, veremos a nuestra protagonista, Neko Tsukahara, trabajar en el Hotel Tasokare. Aquí conoce a sus superiores o compañeros, siendo Atori Haruto un joven que trabaja como recepcionista también y Ruri una joven que trabaja en el área de cocina. Ah, y por supuesto, también está el Gerente que es el alto con cabeza de flama que le da la bienvenida a los visitantes. Es así como veremos a la joven Neko descubrir todos los misterios y secretos que tiene este hotel y sus miembros, al igual que lo hará con sus visitantes.

Es la primera vez que veo un anime de este estilo, la verdad. No esperaba que fuera tan fascinante e interesante a la vez gracias a los distintos misterios y a la forma en la que estos son resueltos en cada episodio. Pero lo que más me fascina es la manera en la que los personajes se desarrollan, siendo el caso aplicable para casi todos, no solo para la protagonista, sino también para los miembros del personal del hotel como también sus visitantes. La temática de una historia conformada por diferentes historias cortas es algo que hasta hace poco no me llamaba la atención, pero como esta serie consigue mezclar lo sobrenatural y el tema de las muertes entonces me ganó la curiosidad. Y es la misma curiosidad de saber la razón de por qué cada persona llegó a este lugar lo que hizo que me quedase enganchado de principio a fin con este anime de tan solo 12 episodios. Y no solo es eso, sino las diferentes personalidades que tienen los personajes, los problemas que afrontan y las lecciones que uno aprende de cada una de sus historias son razones de sobra para que cualquiera que esté leyendo esto vaya a verla de una vez. Incluso, en cuanto a temas fuertes o delicados como los asesinatos o el acoso los tratan con su respectivo nivel de seriedad y drama que se merecen. Me gusta que una obra como esta tenga una manera tan disfrutable de contar una historia y desarrollarla sin perderse ni extenderse demasiado innecesariamente.

Also her mood and attitude seem to be somewhat neutral, at least at the beginning, without showing so many emotions. But then when we see her helping the other visitors to find out who they are and what happened to them, we discover that she has an intelligent and intuitive side to solve cases quickly (as if she were Sherlock Holmes, then). It is this same fascination or interest in mystery that then becomes involved in a case of a somewhat disturbing visitor. This is where the second character that caught my attention in this anime comes in, Masaki Osoto, a supposed medical student who is actually a secret serial killer of women. Upon arriving at the hotel we see him as someone intelligent, educated and interested in the secrets and lives of others, especially that of young Atori Haruto, who is a young man and member of the hotel staff who aspired to be a saxophonist before arriving on this plane. The secrets between these characters I mentioned to you slowly reveal themselves over the course of the series, causing one of the most unexpected and well-done denouements and plot twists I've seen in a supernatural mystery anime such as this to emerge. With the case of the other characters, different highlights and very valuable lessons can be drawn (as is the case of Ruri, for example), but I don't want to make this post longer than usual.

When talking about the supernatural genre, one of the richest countries for this is precisely Japan because of its history, culture and beliefs. This can be noticed in the anime industry, with releases that from the beginning have supernatural elements such as ghosts, ghosts, gods, demons or ancestral beings. However, if it is to go beyond all this then we can find works like this one I'm talking about today where we know the Tasokare Hotel, which is a plane that exists between life and death (as a kind of limbo, then). Now, the fact that they illustrate this plane as a hotel for those forsaken souls who do not know if they are still alive or not is something that fascinates me about the Japanese, as you can see how creative they are with these things. The best thing is that they manage to mix elements such as drama, mystery, suspense and even comedy with this story. By narrating the cases of the different visitors and how Neko along with the rest of the hotel staff help them to discover what has happened to them we can easily put ourselves in their role -especially the protagonist due to the habit of solving mysteries- and watch these experiences with interest and, at the same time with disappointment. Many times they deal with themes related to human evil, the consequences of bad decisions, envy or the result of a tragic life. All this, mixed with that mysterious touch is what makes this anime a complete gem.

En cuanto al tema de los personajes, me llama la atención cómo desarrollan a la protagonista, Neko Tsukahara. Al principio parece ser la típica chica adolescente fanática de las bandas musicales. También su estado de humor y actitud parecen ser un tanto neutral, al menos al principio, sin demostrar tantas emociones. Pero luego cuando la vemos ayudar a los demás visitantes a descubrir quiénes son y lo que les sucedió, descubrimos que tiene un lado inteligente e intuitivo para resolver casos de manera rápida (como si fuera Sherlock Holmes, pues). Es esta misma fascinación o interés por el misterio que luego se ve envuelta en un caso de un visitante un tanto inquietante. Al llegar al hotel lo vemos cómo alguien inteligente, educado e interesado por los secretos y la vida de los demás, sobre todo por la del joven Atori Haruto, quien es un joven y miembro del personal del hotel que aspiraba a ser saxofonista antes de llegar a este plano. Esto lo podemos notar en esta industria del anime, con entregas que desde sus inicios poseen elementos sobrenaturales como lo son espectros, fantasmas, dioses, demonios o seres ancestrales. Sin embargo, si es de ir más allá de todo esto entonces podemos encontrar obras como esta del que les estoy hablando hoy donde conocemos el Hotel Tasokare, el cual es un plano que existe entre la vida y la muerte (como una especie de limbo, pues). Ahora, el hecho de que ilustren este plano como un hotel para aquellas almas desamparadas que no se sabe si siguen vivas o no es algo que me fascina de los japoneses, ya que se puede notar lo creativos que son con estas cosas. Lo mejor es que logran mezclar elementos como el drama, el misterio, el suspenso y hasta la comedia con esta historia. Al relatar los casos de los diferentes visitantes y cómo Neko junto con el resto del personal del hotel los ayudan a descubrir qué les ha sucedido podemos ponernos fácilmente en el papel de ellos -sobre todo de la protagonista debido a la costumbre de resolver misterios- y ver estas experiencias con interés y, a la vez con desilusión. Muchas veces se tratan temas relacionados a la maldad humana, las consecuencias de las malas decisiones, la envidia o el resultado de una vida trágica. Todo esto, mezclado con ese toque misterioso es lo que hace de este anime una completa joya.

Last but not least, let's talk about the technical and visual aspect of this anime. Completely unaware of the origin and production history of the studio that adapted this anime, I speak from my point of view that it is very well done at the audiovisual level. Starting with the character design, the locations, the mixed color palette, the details and the good drawing and animation style; this series looks as good as even some currently popular anime. While it does not have as much fluidity, it manages to hold the viewer's attention with very good details and visual effects, as well as with the transitions and visual shots. While it has its censorship and limits on certain things, the anime does a good job of conveying each story that each episode tells. This, of course, is accompanied with the soundtrack, which manages to elevate said emotions and tension to a certain level that is hard to ignore. With a clean workmanship and style, I consider this anime to be well done for everyone (except for those who are looking for some masterpiece like what studios like Bones, for example, are used to do). In short, this anime is perfect for every fan of mystery and supernatural, even. An anime that both my dear @ale.maar and myself recommend you to watch.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating as far as the mystery, drama and supernatural genre is concerned.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado técnico y visual de este anime. Desconociendo por completo el origen e historial de producción del estudio que adaptó este anime, hablo desde mi punto de vista que está muy bien hecho a nivel audiovisual. Empezando por el diseño de los personajes, los lugares, la paleta de colores mixtos, los detalles y el buen estilo de dibujo y animación; esta serie se ve igual de bien que incluso algunos animes populares actualmente. Si bien no tiene tanta fluidez, consigue atraer la atención del espectador con muy buenos detalles y efectos visuales, al igual que con las transiciones y planos visuales. Si bien tiene su censura y límites en cuanto a ciertas cosas, el anime cumple con transmitir muy bien cada historia que cuenta cada episodio que tiene. Esto, por supuesto, está acompañado con la banda sonora, la cual logra elevar dichas emociones y tensión a cierto nivel que es difícil ignorar. Con un trabajo y un estilo limpio, considero que este anime está bien hecho para todo el mundo (excepto para los que estén buscando alguna obra maestra como lo que acostumbra hacer estudios como Bones, por ejemplo).
