One of the titles that caught my attention the most last year was Mononoke, in its new adaptation as a movie for Netflix. I hadn't heard about this story before, but after watching the trailers the animation definitely made me watch it.
So today I'll share my opinion with you, without spoilers.
Synopsis
Mononoke: Ghost in the Rain (劇場版「モノノ怪 唐傘」 Gekijōban Mononoke: Karakasa) is a 2007 psychological horror anime based on the same-named anime that is a spin-off of the 2006 Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales series.
The story follows the lives of two young girls, Asa and Kame, who are the newest maids to join the Ōoku to serve the shōgun in his castle. Although they have very different abilities, personalities, and aspirations, they become very good friends. However, Kame barely manages to fulfill her responsibilities, making it unbearable to have to endure the pressure of being perfect. On the other hand, Asa is actually perfect for the job, standing out from the start.
But soon both begin to notice that strange things begin to happen within these chambers, something seems not right but neither understands exactly what is it. The same day that the girls arrive, a strange guy, an apothecary, begins to haunt the castle chambers. His attitude does not make sense, but as the story progresses, it will be he who begins to unravel a deep and disturbing secret hidden in the Inner Chambers.
Mononoke is quite an experience. First of all, the inspiration from Japanese culture and mythology is always something that manages to completely capture my attention. Based on the Edo period, seeing the customs and the imaginary of that time is interesting. Obviously, you have to take into account the great amount of fiction, but even so, it is a story that allows you to understand a little more about Japan.
In addition, the cultural elements are used perfectly to write the story, especially for the development of all the female characters who are actually the center of attention. Pressure, perfectionism, dreams, meeting expectations imposed by others, friendship, self-esteem and self-worth are some of the themes that we see touched on in this story. The perfect mix between culture and the characteristics of the characters per se make their development, apart from being consistent, entertaining due to its supernatural character.
On the other hand, I think the psychological horror aspect is very well achieved and is another feature that provides entertainment. Let's keep in mind that they basically deal with creatures or entities from another plane, so reflecting that mystery and mysticism is necessary to understand many of the characters' reactions.
Aside from that, what is truly remarkable about this film is undoubtedly the animation. It is a festival of colors that really gives some spectacular scenes to watch. However, and this is something that is not exclusive to the animation as it is also reflected in the pace of the story, many times everything is too frenetic. Sometimes the animation feels dizzying, the story moves very fast, if you stop paying attention you will probably lose the thread. However, it is not something that is too annoying, at least for me. Although I can understand that at least the animation can make you feel dizzy.
It should be noted, however, that this film is definitely fan service, meaning that there are many aspects of the plot that are not explained. The directors assumed that the audience for the film would be the same ones who have seen the previous series, and although I don't doubt that, it would have been better if they included certain explanations so that those of us who haven't seen anything before could better understand the story.
Perhaps those points will be better developed in subsequent movies, but in my opinion it was better not to leave so many things adrift. My biggest doubt is the story of the apothecary, but even so I was able to enjoy this character and understand his intentions. I insist, it's not that what they did is wrong, it's just that a little more context would have been better.
But in general, this is an excellent film that can be seen by everyone. Apart from that, emotionally it can move you and make you feel identified with the experiences of the protagonists. Without a doubt, it even makes you want to watch the previous series to understand everything better. So if you haven't seen it yet, you better give it a chance.

Hoy les comparto mi opinión sin spoilers
Sinopsis
Mononoke: El fantasma bajo la lluvia (劇場版「モノノ怪 唐傘」 Gekijōban Mononoke: Karakasa) es un anime de terror psicológico y sobrenatural basado en su antecesor del mismo nombre publicado en 2007, el cual es un spin-off de la serie Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales del 2006.
La historia trata sobre la vida de dos jóvenes chicas, Asa y Kame, que son las sirvientas más recientes integradas en el Ōoku para el servicio del shōgun en su castillo. Aunque ambas tienen habilidades, personalidades y aspiraciones muy distintas, logran hacerse muy buenas amigas. Sin embargo, Kame apenas logra cumplir sus responsabilidades, haciéndose insoportable tener que aguantar la presión de ser perfecta. En cambio Asa es realmente perfecta para el trabajo, destacando desde el inicio.
Pero pronto ambas comienzan a notar que dentro de estos aposentos comienzan a ocurrir cosas extrañas, algo parece no estar bien pero ninguna entiende exactamente qué. El mismo día que llegan las chicas, un tipo extraño, un boticario comienza a rondar los aposentos del castillo. Su actitud no tiene sentido, pero a medida que avanza la historia será él quien comience a desentrañar un profundo y perturbador secreto oculto en las Cámaras Internas.
Mononoke es toda una experiencia. En primer lugar, la inspiración en la cultura y mitología nipona siempre es algo que logra enganchar completamente mi atención. Basado en la época Edo, ver las costumbres y el imaginario de aquel entonces es interesante. Obviamente hay que tener en cuenta la gran carga de ficción, pero incluso así es una historia que te permite comprender un poco más sobre Japón.
Aparte, los elementos culturales son utilizados perfectamente para escribir la historia, sobretodo para el desarrollo de todos los personajes femeninos que en realidad, son el centro de la atención. La presión, el perfeccionismo, los sueños, cumplir expectativas impuestas por otros, la amistad, la autoestima y el valor propio son algunos de los temas que vemos tocados en esta historia. La perfecta mezcla entre lo cultural y las características de los personajes hacen que su desarrollo aparte de ser consistente sea entretenido por su carácter sobrenatural.
Por otro lado, el aspecto de terror psicológico creo que está muy bien logrado y es otra característica que aporta entretenimiento. Tengamos presente que básicamente tratan con criaturas o entidades de otro plano, por lo que reflejar ese misterio y misticismo es necesario para comprender muchas de las reacciones de los personajes.
Aparte, lo que es verdaderamente destacable de esta película es sin duda la animación. Es un festival de colores que realmente da unas escenas espectaculares de ver. Sin embargo, y esto es algo que no es exclusivo de la animación pues también se refleja en el ritmo de la historia, muchas veces todo es demasiado frenético. A veces la animación se siente vertiginosa, la historia avanza muy rápido, si dejas de prestar atención probablemente pierdas el hilo. Sin embargo, no es algo que sea demasiado molesto, al menos para mí. Aunque puedo entender que al menos la animación puede llegar a marearte.
Eso sí, hay que destacar que esta película definitivamente es fan service, es decir, hay muchos aspectos de la trama que no son explicados. Los directores asumieron que el público de la película sería el mismo que ha visto las entregas anteriores, y aunque no pongo eso en duda, habría sido mejor que incluyeran ciertas explicaciones para que quienes no hemos visto nada comprendiéramos mejor la historia.
Quizás esos puntos sean mejor desarrollados en siguientes entregas, pero en mi opinión era mejor no dejar tantas cosas a la deriva. Mi gran duda es la historia del boticario, pero aún así pude desfrutarme este personaje y comprender sus intenciones. Insisto, no es que lo que hicieron esté mal, solo que hubiera sido mejor un poco más de contexto.
Pero en general, esta es una excelente película que puede ser vista por todos. Aparte emocionalmente puede conmoverte y hacerte sentir identificado con las vivencias de las protagonistas. Sin duda, te da incluso ganas de ver las series anteriores para comprender todo mejor. Así que si no la has visto aún, dale una oportunidad.
I don't know if you've seen the anime but it's a gem. It came out in 2007 but it is incredible. The good thing is that to see this movie you don't need to have seen it because you can understand it without problems but anyway I recommend it too, there are like 4-5 different plots in the 12 episodes it has.
This movie is top, I liked it a lot. In fact the animation, obviously, they improved it a lot. That it's a horror thriller is something you don't expect but at times it's kind of dark.
I actually haven't seen it, this movie was my first encounter with the story and although you can understand the story easily there's a few things I would like to understand better, so I'll definitely be watching the series soon.
I also enjoyed this movie a lot, it's fun to watch and the story is truly interesting. I guess the series is even better.

Hola amiga 😉 ¡Me encantó tu reseña sobre "MONONOKE"! Es un análisis bastante completo y equilibrado, destacando tanto los puntos fuertes como los detalles que pudieron haber sido mejores. Me gusta cómo resaltas la riqueza cultural e histórica de la película y cómo la mezcla con el terror psicológico está bien lograda. Además, mencionas algo clave,la animación frenética, que puede ser un punto a favor o en contra según el espectador.
No he tenido la oportunidad de verla, pero la colocare en mi lista para ver cuando tenga un tiempito y veré que tal.

Although yes, everything is frenetic so for some people can be definitely hard to watch. In my case was the animation that made me dizzy, so I had to paused it and watch the rest later 😅. So I definitely get what you mean.
