Hello everyone, I hope you are doing great today, this time I want to talk about an anime that is somewhat special to me, I will talk about one of the first anime that I saw, back in 2016, it is about: Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches.. let me tell you, friends, that I had no idea what a gem I was going to find.. let me see, let me put you in context. We have our protagonist, Ryu Yamada, he is the classic high school delinquent: he gets into fights, falls asleep in class and his grades do not matter to him.. basically, a problem child, at the opposite extreme, but very far away, is Urara Shiraishi, the school brain. She’s cute, bright, super distant and always in her own world, face in a book… they live in completely different universes, then one day, in the most cliché and awkward anime moment imaginable, Yamada trips on the stairs and boom!, he takes Shiraishi with him, they roll down, hit each other pretty hard and when Yamada wakes up… he’s in Shiraishi’s body… I know, I know. “Another body swap comedy? We’ve seen that a thousand times, haven’t we?”

That’s exactly what I thought, I was expecting the usual jokes, the awkward moments and a couple of easy laughs… oh yeah, there’s a bit of that at the beginning, but that’s where the series hooks you and never lets go… they immediately discover that what caused the switch was the accidental kiss they shared during the fall. A kiss is the switch to switch bodies… ok, an interesting twist, but wait, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It turns out that's not just her power... they soon realize that there are seven "witches" in their school, each with a unique power that is activated by a kiss, and Shiraishi is just one of them.

This is the premise that becomes addictive beyond belief, Yamada, by twists of fate, ends up forming a "Supernatural Studies Club" with Shiraishi and other key characters... their mission? To find the other six witches, learn about their powers and understand the mystery behind the whole thing, what I loved, what really blew my mind, is that the motivation for this search never feels silly or forced... it's not the typical "let's go on an adventure just because!" Here there are real consequences, mysteries that are revealed and a plot that progresses super well and immerses you in the hidden side of the school, the story starts as a simple body-swap joke and quickly evolves into a supernatural mystery with romance that, honestly, is great.

Hola a todos, espero que hoy estén genial, en esta ocasión, les quiero hablar de un anime algo especial para mí, les hablaré de uno de los primeros animes que ví, por allá del 2016, se trata de: Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches.. déjenme decirles, panas, que no tenía ni idea de la joyita que me iba a encontrar.. a ver, les pongo en contexto. Tenemos a nuestro prota, Ryu Yamada, es el clásico delincuente de prepa: se mete en peleas, se duerme en clase y sus notas le valen un comino.. básicamente, un chico problema, en el extremo opuesto, pero lejísimos, está Urara Shiraishi, la cerebrito de la escuela. Es linda, brillante, súper distante y siempre anda en su mundo, con la cara metida en un libro.. viven en universos completamente diferentes, entonces, un día, en el momento más cliché y torpe de anime que se puedan imaginar, Yamada se tropieza en las escaleras y ¡pum!, se lleva a Shiraishi con él, ruedan, se dan un buen golpe y cuando Yamada despierta… está en el cuerpo de Shiraishi.. ya sé, ya sé. "¿Otra comedia de cambio de cuerpos? Ya la vimos mil veces, ¿no?".

Eso mismito pensé yo, ya me esperaba los chistes de siempre, los momentos incómodos y un par de risas fáciles.. h sí, al principio hay un poco de eso, pero es justo ahí donde la serie te engancha y ya no te suelta.. descubren al toque que lo que provocó el cambio fue el beso accidental que se dieron en la caída. Un beso es el interruptor para cambiar de cuerpo.. ok, un giro interesante, pero esperen, que eso es solo la puntita del iceberg. Resulta que ese no es solo su poder.. pronto se dan cuenta de que en su escuela hay siete "brujas", cada una con un poder único que se activa con un beso, y Shiraishi es solo una de ellas.

Esta es la premisa que se vuelve adictiva a más no poder, Yamada, por azares del destino, termina armando un "Club de Estudios Sobrenaturales" con Shiraishi y otros personajes clave.. su misión? Encontrar a las otras seis brujas, saber cuáles son sus poderes y entender el misterio detrás de todo el asunto, lo que me encantó, lo que de verdad me voló la cabeza, es que la motivación para esta búsqueda nunca se siente tonta ni forzada.. no es el típico "¡vamos a la aventura porque sí!". Aquí hay consecuencias reales, misterios que se van revelando y una trama que avanza súper bien y te mete de lleno en el lado oculto de la escuela, la historia arranca como un simple chiste de cambio de cuerpos y evoluciona rapidísimo a un misterio sobrenatural con romance que, de verdad, está buenísimo.

I consider it to be “a masterpiece that follows the formula to a T.” At first glance, it has every cliché you could imagine: the delinquent with a heart of gold, the cold-blooded genius student, the weird student council, the high school setting… It’s a formula we all know by heart, but the execution, my friends, the way they do it, is what makes it amazing. It takes all these ingredients we already know and makes a dish that feels familiar, like home-cooked food, but at the same time is surprisingly delicious and fresh. You feel comfortable because you already know the basics, but it’s done with so much heart and such clever writing that it feels like something totally new. While you’ll laugh a lot, I was surprised that it leans much more towards being a straightforward, heartfelt romance than a slapstick comedy. The emotional moments hit you, and they hit you hard.

Obviously, a story like this depends 100% on its characters, and this is where Yamada-kun really shines, the cast is fantastic, I'm serious... there wasn't a single character that I didn't care about in the end. Let's see, let's talk about Yamada, he starts out as the typical problem child, impulsive and argumentative... but as he gets more entangled in the world of witches, you see a brutal evolution, he has the power to copy the ability of any witch he kisses, which forces him to get fully involved in their problems... he goes from being a guy who didn't care about anyone to becoming someone compassionate, empathetic and who really goes out of his way to help his friends. He becomes the heart of the group, the one who solves the problems, and you end up cheering him on with everything...

Shiraishi is much more than a pretty face with good grades, she feels lonely, it costs her a lot to make friends and she is surprisingly practical with her power, the chemistry between them two is the soul of the series. But it doesn't stop there; each of the other witches has their own unique personality and a real-world problem connected to their power. Yamada's job is to help each of them understand and overcome their powers, which in turn helps them grow as people. They learn, they mature, and you feel like you're on that journey with them. The Supernatural Studies Club becomes this little family of misfits who found each other along the way, and it's really, really beautiful to see how they support each other and bond.

Yo considero que es "una obra maestra que sigue la fórmula al pie de la letra", a simple vista, tiene todos los clichés que te puedas imaginar: el delincuente con un corazón de oro, la estudiante genio que es fría, el consejo estudiantil medio raro, el escenario de la prepa… Es una fórmula que ya nos sabemos de memoria, pero la ejecución, amigos, la forma en que lo hacen, es lo que la hace increíble.. agarra todos estos ingredientes que ya conocemos y te prepara un platillo que se siente familiar, como comida de casa, pero al mismo tiempo es sorprendentemente delicioso y fresco. Te sientes cómodo porque ya conoces la base, pero está hecho con tanto corazón y un guion tan inteligente que se siente como algo totalmente nuevo.. aunque te vas a reír un montón, me sorprendió que se inclina mucho más a ser un romance directo y sincero que una comedia de pastelazo, los momentos emotivos te pegan, y te pegan duro.

Obviamente, una historia así depende al cien de sus personajes, y es aquí donde Yamada-kun de verdad se luce, el elenco es fantástico, se los digo en serio.. no hubo ni un solo personaje que al final no me terminara importando. A ver, hablemos de Yamada, empieza siendo el típico chico problema, impulsivo y peleonero.. pero conforme se va enredando en el mundo de las brujas, ves una evolución brutal, él tiene el poder de copiar la habilidad de cualquier bruja a la que bese, lo que lo obliga a meterse de lleno en los problemas de ellas.. pasa de ser un tipo al que no le importaba nadie a volverse alguien compasivo, empático y que de verdad se parte la madre por ayudar a sus amigos. Se convierte en el corazón del grupo, el que resuelve los líos, y terminas echándole porras con todo..

Shiraishi es mucho más que una cara bonita con buenas notas, se siente sola, le cuesta un montón hacer amigos y es sorprendentemente práctica con su poder, la química entre ellos dos es el alma de la serie. Pero la cosa no para ahí, cada una de las otras brujas tiene su propia personalidad y un problema del mundo real que está conectado con su poder.. el trabajo de Yamada es ayudar a cada una a entender y superar sus poderes, lo que a su vez las ayuda a ellas a crecer como personas. Aprenden, maduran, y sientes que estás viviendo ese viaje con ellas, el Club de Estudios Sobrenaturales se convierte en esta pequeña familia de inadaptados que se encontraron en el camino, y es muy, muy bonito ver cómo se apoyan y se unen.

Now, let's talk about something key, something that can make or break a short anime: pacing. This anime only has one 12-episode season... no way, they killed it with this one. Do you know how so many short anime like this try to cram 100 chapters of manga into 12 episodes and leave you with your brain in knots, or the other way around, keep adding filler and end with a horrible ending that leaves you hanging? Well, this series gets around both of those things perfectly. It adapts just the right amount of story, the plot gets better with each chapter, more characters are added, and the mysteries are built at a perfect pace. They even take the opportunity to include a fun bit of "filler," like the typical beach episode, but it never feels like they're wasting time.

They use it to develop the characters and just have a good time with this cool little gang... the ending... ugh, the ending. Okay, can we just pause for a moment to applaud an anime that ACTUALLY ENDS? It doesn't feel rushed at all, it wraps up the main plot beautifully, resolves the romance, and leaves you with a huge, dorky grin on your face, and I'm not ashamed to admit it, maybe even a tear in your eye because it's so beautiful and because it's already over... without leaving you waiting for a sequel, without leaving you with doubts... just a good, solid ending. Okay, so what about the technical side of things? The art and music, look, visually, the series looks good, the animation is clean, the colors are vivid, and everything is quite pleasant to look at... is it going to win awards for being super original? Well, most likely not, if I'm honest, some of the character designs feel a bit familiar... like you see Yamada and he looks like Rin from Blue Exorcist, or you see another character and think "this one looks like the one from such and such series".. but, meh, it's a minor complaint, the characters are expressive and the overall aesthetic is solid.

Ahora, hablemos de algo que es clave, algo que puede salvar o arruinar un anime corto: el ritmo.. este anime tiene solo una temporada de 12 episodios.. no manchen, la rompieron con esto. ¿Ubican cómo muchísimos animes así de cortos intentan meterte 100 capítulos de manga en 12 episodios y te dejan con el cerebro hecho nudo, o al revés, se la pasan metiendo relleno y terminan con un final horrible que te deja colgado? Pues esta serie le saca la vuelta a esas dos cosas perfectamente.. adapta la cantidad justa de historia, la trama se pone más buena con cada capítulo, más personajes se van sumando y los misterios se construyen a un ritmo perfecto, hasta se dan chance de meter un "rellenito" divertido, como el típico episodio de playa, pero nunca se siente como que están perdiendo el tiempo.

Lo usan para desarrollar a los personajes y para que, simplemente, te la pases bien con esta bandita tan chida.. el final... uf, el final. A ver, ¿podemos hacer una pausa para aplaudirle a un anime que DE VERDAD TERMINA? no se siente para nada apresurado, cierra la trama principal de una manera hermosa, resuelve el romance y te deja con una sonrisota de menso en la cara y, la verdad no me da pena admitirlo, chance y hasta con una lagrimita en el ojo de lo bonito que es y porque ya se acabó.. sin dejarte esperando una secuela, sin dejarte con dudas.. solo un final bueno y sólido. Ok, ¿y qué onda con lo técnico? El arte y la música, miren, visualmente, la serie se ve bien, la animación es limpia, los colores son vivos y todo es bastante agradable de ver.. va a ganar premios por ser súper original? Pues, lo más seguro es que no, si les soy sincero, algunos diseños de personajes se sienten un poco familiares.. como que ves a Yamada y te da un aire a Rin de Blue Exorcist, o ves a otro personaje y piensas "este se parece al de tal serie"..pero, meh, es una queja mínima, los personajes son expresivos y la estética en general es sólida.

And the music is similar... it's not the soundtrack that's going to change your life, but it's super effective. You have the cheerful, somewhat cheesy tunes for the comedic moments, and then some more orchestral, more serious pieces to make the emotional scenes hit you harder... it fits the series like a glove. I have to say, though, that the opening and ending songs are really great. The opening, "Kuchizuki Diamond," is super catchy, I swear I didn't skip it even once... the music really gets you in the mood, although it's probably not something you'll put on your everyday playlist... so, who is this series for? Honestly, I think almost anyone can find something they like, but it's a definite recommendation for certain groups. Do you like romantic comedies or slice-of-life anime, the kind that feel familiar but with a clever and original twist? This series is for you.

Do you love series with a bunch of diverse characters, who you really see grow and overcome their problems? Phew, this one's for you, but completely! And most importantly: are you looking for an anime that has a good ending that leaves you happy and satisfied? If you said yes to any of those things, you have to watch this series, period... now, who could not like it? Well, look, if you're already fed up with romantic comedies and high school stories, and what you're looking for is something dark, raw, and dense... well, maybe this one isn't for you... or if you're looking for a story about a couple who's already together, instead of the whole romance thing, well, chances are, it's not going to be for you either. In the end, for me, Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches gets a pretty solid 8.5/10. I’m not giving it a higher rating just because, as I told you, the art isn’t the most innovative thing in the world and the main idea, deep down, uses clichés that we already know… but that’s splitting hairs, for what it aims to be —a romantic, fun, sincere and very charming mystery— it’s almost perfect.

It’s a series with a huge heart, a story that respects your time and characters that you’re going to fall in love with, yes or yes… seriously, if you still haven’t decided or are looking for something to watch, give it a chance, I promise you won’t regret it… it was one of my first contacts with romance in anime, and it was what gave me more and more desire to see romantic stories and comedies, it was a perfect dish to start with, I was enchanted and that helped me continue in this world… and well, that’s all for today’s review, see you in the next ones! Y con la música pasa algo parecido.. no es la banda sonora que te va a cambiar la vida, pero es súper efectiva, tienes las tonaditas alegres y medio cursis para los momentos de comedia, y luego unas piezas más orquestales, más serias, para que las escenas emotivas te peguen más duro.. le queda como anillo al dedo a la serie. Eso sí, tengo que decir que el opening y el ending son unos temazos, pero temazos de verdad, el opening, "Kuchizuki Diamond", es súper pegajoso, se los juro que no me lo salté ni una sola vez.. la música te mete bien en la onda, aunque chance y no es algo que vayas a poner en tu playlist de todos los días.. entonces, ¿para quién es esta serie? La verdad, yo creo que casi cualquiera le puede encontrar algo que le guste, pero es una recomendación segurísima para ciertos grupos. ¿Te gustan las comedias románticas o los animes de recuentos de la vida, de esos que se sienten familiares pero con un giro bien inteligente y original? Esta serie es para ti.

Te encantan las series con un montón de personajes diferentes, a los que de verdad ves crecer y superar sus problemas? ¡Uf, esta es para ti, pero de cabeza! Y lo más importante: ¿estás buscando un anime que tenga un final bueno que te deje contento y satisfecho? Si dijiste que sí a cualquiera de estas cosas, tienes que ver esta serie, y punto.. ahora, ¿a quién podría no gustarle? Pues mira, si ya estás harto de las comedias románticas y las historias de prepa, y lo que buscas es algo oscuro, crudo, denso... pues a lo mejor esta no es para ti.. o si buscas una historia de una pareja que ya está junta, en lugar de todo el rollo de la conquista, pues chance y tampoco te va a cuadrar, al final, para mí, Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches se lleva un 8.5/10, bien sólido. No le doy más calificación nomás porque, como ya les dije, el arte no es la cosa más innovadora del mundo y la idea principal, en el fondo, usa clichés que ya conocemos.. pero eso ya es buscarle el pelo en la sopa, para lo que busca ser —un misterio romántico, divertido, sincero y con mucho encanto— es casi perfecta.

Es una serie con un corazón enorme, una historia que respeta tu tiempo y unos personajes de los que te vas a enamorar, sí o sí.. en serio, si todavía no se deciden o andan buscando qué ver, denle una oportunidad, les prometo que no se van a arrepentir.. fue de mis primeros contactos con el romance en el anime, y fue lo que me dió más y más ganas de ver historias románticas y comedias, fue un plato perfecto para empezar, quedé encantado y eso me ayudó a seguir por esto mundo.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy, nos veremos en las próximas!
