Hello everyone, friends of Hive Book Club, I hope you are feeling great today, this time I want to share my thoughts on the book: The Wicked Deep by Shay Earnshaw and I have to tell you that it was a trip, a pretty crazy trip, but it left me kind of thinking, from the beginning, Sparrow caught me, it is a small coastal town in Oregon that has a mysterious vibe, a very dark story... the thing is that 200 years ago, three sisters accused of witchcraft were drowned and, every summer, they come back and put themselves in the bodies of the town girls to get revenge... how cool!

This mix of folklore, fantasy and a sort of magical touch makes the story really grab you, it keeps you in suspense and leaves you thinking deep thoughts... from the very beginning, this book hit me hard in the emotions, the way Earnshaw describes Sparrow Village is incredible, I swear you get in there... you almost feel the cold of the fog, you hear the waves crashing and you feel the tension in the air every summer, it's not just a place, it's as if it were another character... it draws you into its story as if it were whispering all its dark secrets in your ear.

And another point in its favor is how it is written... Earnshaw's prose flows super well, mixing the story of the protagonist, Penny, with memories from two centuries ago... those memories are not just for filler, they go into a lot of depth into the tragedy of the Swan sisters, at first you think they are evil witches and that's it, but as the story progresses, you realize that they were beautiful, desired women, and that they were misjudged for being... who they were. This twist gives a melancholic touch to the story and makes you question who the real bad guys were... the author handles this wave of duality well and maintains the mystery, although I did see some twists coming a little early.

Hola a todos, amigos de Hive Book Club, espero que se encuentren genial en el día de hoy, en esta ocasión quiero compartir mis opiniones sobre el libro: The Wicked Deep de Shay Earnshaw y tengo que decirles que fue un viaje, un viaje bastante loco, pero que me dejó así como.. pensando, desde el inicio, Sparrow me atrapó, es un pueblito costero en Oregón que tiene una vibra misteriosa, una historia muy oscura.. la cuestión es que hace 200 años, ahogaron a tres hermanas acusadas de brujería y, cada verano, ellas regresan y se meten en el cuerpo de las chicas del pueblo para vengarse.. qué fuerte!

Esta mezcla de folclore, fantasía y como que un toquecito mágico hace que la historia te atrape un montón, te mantiene en tensión y te deja pensando cosas profundas.. desde el principio, este libro me pegó fuerte en las emociones, es que la forma en que Earnshaw describe Sparrow Village es increíble, te juro que te metes ahí.. casi que sentís el frío de la niebla, escuchas las olas chocando y sentís la tensión que hay en el aire cada verano, no es solo un lugar, es como si fuera un personaje más.. te atrapa en su historia como si te estuviera contando al oído todos sus secretos oscuros.

Y otro punto a favor es cómo está escrito.. la prosa de Earnshaw fluye súper bien, mezcla la historia de la protagonista, Penny, con recuerdos de hace dos siglos.. esos recuerdos no son solo para rellenar, profundizan un montón en la tragedia de las hermanas Swan, al principio piensas que son brujas malas y ya, pero a medida que avanza la historia, te das cuenta de que eran mujeres hermosas, deseadas, y que las juzgaron mal por ser… como eran. Este giro le da un toque melancólico a la historia y te hace cuestionar quiénes eran los malos de verdad.. la autora maneja bien esta onda de la dualidad y mantiene el misterio, aunque algunos giros sí los vi venir un poco antes.

Speaking a little about the characters, I have to say that there is a bit of everything, Penny, for example, is a character with whom I connected quickly, you totally understand her drama of wanting to leave that scary town and at the same time feeling trapped there by the curse... Then there's Bo, who is like the new kid who arrives and changes the whole atmosphere, his vibe with Penny is super important to the story, and although they have nice moments, sometimes I felt like everything happened too fast between them... I don't know if I was completely convinced by that connection so deep that they do the things they do.

But still, their relationship gives a break to the general darkness of the book, it gives it a little warmth... but what really kept me hooked was the mystery of who was going to be possessed this year by one of the Swan sisters... nobody has any idea who it will be! Imagine the level of paranoia and mistrust in the town, a modern-day witch hunt... I was there trying to guess who the next victim would be, and the flashbacks of the sisters' lives before they were killed help you a lot to understand why they do what they do and even end up making you feel a little sorry for them, which makes the story much more interesting. But be careful, not everything is perfect, as always, although the atmosphere and the duality of the sisters are very well achieved, there are some parts that are a bit up in the air... for example, they touch on sensitive topics like weird consent, but they don't go into much depth, they are details that leave you thinking and that may make some people a little uncomfortable, even if they are not obvious at first glance.

Hablando un poco de los personajes, tengo que decir que hay de todo un poco, Penny, por ejemplo, es un personaje con el que conecté rápidamente, entiendes totalmente su drama de querer irse de ese pueblo de terror y a la vez sentirse atrapada ahí por la maldición.. Después está Bo, que es como el chico nuevo que llega y cambia todo el ambiente, su onda con Penny es súper importante para la historia, y aunque tienen momentos lindos, a veces sentí que todo pasaba muy rápido entre ellos.. no sé si me llegó a convencer del todo esa conexión tan profunda como para que hagan las cosas que hacen.

Pero igual, su relación le da un respiro a la oscuridad general del libro, le mete un poco de calorcito.. pero lo que sí me mantuvo enganchadísimo fue el misterio de quién iba a ser poseída este año por una de las hermanas Swan.. nadie tiene idea de quién va a ser! Imagínate el nivel de paranoia y desconfianza en el pueblo, una cacería de brujas moderna.. yo estaba ahí tratando de adivinar quién sería la próxima víctima, y los flashbacks de la vida de las hermanas antes de que las mataran te ayudan un montón a entender por qué hacen lo que hacen y hasta te terminan dando un poco de pena, lo que hace que la historia sea mucho más interesante. Pero ojo, que no todo es perfecto, como siempre, aunque la atmósfera y la dualidad de las hermanas están muy bien logradas, hay algunas partes que quedan un poco en el aire.. por ejemplo, tocan temas delicados como el consentimiento medio raro, pero no profundizan mucho en eso, son detalles que te dejan pensando y que quizás a algunos les incomoden un poco, aunque no se vean a simple vista.

Well, despite having bad moments, it also has other good ones... that are worth it, the vibe of the environment, how they tell you the story jumping between the past and the present, and the constant mystery of who is going to be possessed, make you entertain yourself reading it if you like urban fantasy with a paranormal touch... I give a... 3.5 out of 5 ... if you like stories with dark legends, curses and characters who can't escape revenge, this book will hook you, it has paranormal things, and even a little bit of historical touches, although it has some parts that go a little slow and maybe you guess some things ahead of time, but overall it catches you... it's not a book I would read again tomorrow, but the style it has and the story keep you thinking, for me, the mix of the world they created, the mystery that catches you and the story of the sisters made it worth reading... and well, that's all for today! A ver, apesar de tener momentos malos, también tiene otros buenos.. que valen la pena, la onda del ambiente, cómo te van contando la historia saltando entre el pasado y el presente, y el misterio constante de quien va a ser poseído, hacen que te entretengas leyéndolo si te gusta la fantasía urbana con un toque paranormal.. le doy un… 3.5 de 5.. si te gustan las historias con leyendas oscuras, maldiciones y personajes que no pueden escapar de la venganza, este libro te va a enganchar, tiene cosas paranormales, y hasta un poquito de toques históricos, aunque tiene algunas partes que van un poco lento y quizás adivinas algunas cosas antes de tiempo, pero en general te atrapa.. no es un libro que leería de nuevo mañana, pero el estilo que tiene y la historia se te quedan dando vueltas, para mí, la mezcla del mundo que crearon, el misterio que te atrapa y la historia de las hermanas hizo que valiera la pena leerlo.. y bueno, eso es todo por hoy!
