Hello everyone, fellow fans of good stories, I hope you're all doing super well. Today, I'm going to talk a bit about a book I finished yesterday: The Fake Mate by Lana Ferguson! I went into this book with sky-high expectations; I was seeing it everywhere, the cover is amazing, and the synopsis sounded like perfect bait for a romance reader like me... and honestly, it delivered, it delivered quite well… but, let's put our cards on the table from the start… this is Omegaverse, through and through. I mean, we're talking werewolves, alphas, omegas, the famous knotting, and it's very, VERY spicy. If any of this makes you think, "uh, no, thanks," this is your sign to just pass on it… but if you're curious, or if you're already a fan of this whole thing, then get comfortable because we've got plenty of tea to spill. It goes like this: our two main characters are doctors at the same hospital.

First, there's Mackenzie, an omega who has just finished her residency… she's like a walking ray of sunshine, super nice, but she is FED UP. Her grandmother is obsessed with finding her a partner and has her on an endless parade of disastrous dates. So, to get her off her back, in a moment of panic, she lets out a little white lie that she's already seeing someone. The problem? The first name that comes to mind is Dr. Noah Taylor, the hospital's official grump… and that's where Noah comes in. He's the head of cardiology, an alpha, and a first-class sourpuss. He has spent his entire career hiding that he's an alpha because, apparently, being a single alpha in a high-ranking position is extremely frowned upon… the thing is, someone snitches, reports him anonymously, and suddenly, his job is hanging by a thread.

The hospital board has him against a wall and he needs a solution, ASAP. So, when the ever-cheerful Dr. Carter approaches him with this crazy idea that she needs a fake boyfriend, a lightbulb goes off for him… they make a deal: they're going to pretend to be a couple. It's a win-win. Mackenzie gets rid of her grandmother and her dates with gym bros, and Noah can present a stable, "settled man" image to the board, proving he's not some wild, out-of-control alpha. As a bonus, Noah's powerful alpha scent will keep any other unwanted suitors at bay. A perfect agreement, right? What could possibly go wrong? Ha!

Hola a todos, amigos fanaticos de las buenas historias, espero que todos estén super bien, y les hablaré un poco de un libro que termine ayer, se trata de: The Fake Mate de Lana Ferguson! Yo le entré a este libro con las expectativas por las nubes, me salía hasta en la sopa, la portada está genial y la sinopsis sonaba como carnada para una lectora de romance como yo.. la verdad, cumplió, cumplió bastante bien… pero, a ver, vamos a poner las cartas sobre la mesa desde el principio.. esto es Omegaverse con todas las de la ley. O sea, estamos hablando de hombres lobo, alfas, omegas, el famoso knotting, y es muy, MUY spicy, si algo de esto te suena a “uy, no, gracias”, esta es tu señal para que mejor lo dejes pasar.. pero si te dio curiosidad, o si ya eres fan de este rollo, pues ponte cómodo porque hay chismecito para rato..

La cosa va así: nuestros dos protas son doctores en el mismo hospital, primero está Mackenzie, una omega que acaba de terminar su residencia.. ella es como un solecito andante, súper buena gente, pero ya está HARTA.. su abuela está obsesionada con encontrarle pareja y la tiene en un desfile sin fin de citas desastrosas. Así que, para quitársela de encima, en un momento de pánico suelta la mentirita de que ya está saliendo con alguien. ¿El problema? El primer nombre que se le ocurre es el del Dr. Noah Taylor, el gruñón oficial del hospital.. ahí es donde entra Noah, él es el jefe de cardiología, un alfa y un amargado de primera. Se ha pasado toda su carrera escondiendo que es un alfa porque, al parecer, ser un alfa soltero en un puesto importante está súper mal visto.. el chiste es que alguien va de chismoso, lo delata anónimamente y, de la nada, su trabajo pende de un hilo..

La junta del hospital lo tiene contra la pared y necesita una solución, pero ya. Así que, cuando la siempre alegre Dra. Carter se le acerca con esta idea loquísima de que necesita un novio falso, a él como que se le prende el foco.. hacen un trato: van a fingir que son pareja. Es un ganar-ganar, Mackenzie se libra de su abuela y de sus citas con tipos del gym, y Noah puede mostrarle a la junta una imagen estable y de “hombre sentado”, demostrando que no es ningún alfa salvaje y fuera de control, como bonus, el olor súper potente de Noah como alfa va a mantener a raya a cualquier otro pretendiente indeseado. Un acuerdo perfecto, ¿no? ¿Qué podría salir mal? ¡Ja!

And let me tell you something! The start of the story and the dialogue are... wow, just wonderful! The "grumpy guy with the ray-of-sunshine girl" cliché is done so well here at the beginning… seriously, I was dying of laughter during their first little fights and conversations. Watching Mackenzie slowly break down Noah's grumpy shell is so sweet, and seeing him soften up, even when he doesn't want to, is the best part. And then there's the whole "scenting" thing, where he has to mark her with his scent to make their relationship believable to other wolves—whew, it's the perfect excuse for chemistry to start building between them, hahaha. It works as this super tense and very intimate foreplay that truly affects them both, and it slowly starts to blur the line that their agreement is "just business." But, as I was reading it, I couldn't shake the feeling of... "I've seen this before."

If you've read The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood, you'll know exactly what I mean… Noah Taylor sometimes feels like a carbon copy of Adam Carlsen: the tall, genius, grumpy guy with a super hidden soft side… and no, it's not a coincidence. Apparently, both books originated as Reylo fanfics, which explains why the characters and the dynamic are so, so similar. Look, for many people, this is going to be a huge plus. If you loved The Love Hypothesis and were left thinking, "Ugh, I want this exact thing, but with werewolves and a thousand times spicier," then congratulations, you've found your ideal book. For me, honestly, although I enjoyed it a lot, the similarities were so, so obvious that at times it felt like I was reading a remix of a story I already love, and that kind of took away some of the magic, you know? It lessened the impact.

Y les digo una cosa! El arranque de la historia y los diálogos son... ¡uff, una maravilla! El cliché este del gruñón con la chica que es un rayito de sol, aquí está súper bien hecho al principio.. de verdad, yo me moría de la risa con sus primeras peleítas y sus conversaciones, ver cómo Mackenzie va rompiendo poco a poco ese caparazón de amargado que tiene Noah es una ternura, y ver cómo él se va ablandando, aunque no quiera, es de lo mejor. Y luego está la cosa esta del scenting, o sea, que él tiene que marcarla con su olor para que el cuento de que son pareja sea creíble para los otros lobos, ¡uf!, es el pretexto perfecto para que empiece a haber química entre ellos jajaja, funciona como un juego previo súper tenso y muy íntimo, que de verdad les afecta a los dos, y poco a poco va borrando la línea esa de que su acuerdo es "solo negocios".. pero, mientras lo leía, no me podía sacar de la cabeza una sensación de... "esto ya lo he visto antes".

Si ustedes leyeron La hipótesis del amor de Ali Hazelwood, me van a entender perfectamente.. es que Noah Taylor a ratos se siente como una copia al carbón de Adam Carlsen: el tipo alto, genio, amargado, pero con un lado tierno súper escondido.. pues no, no es coincidencia. Aparentemente, los dos libros nacieron como fanfics de Reylo, y eso explica por qué los personajes y la dinámica se parecen tantísimo, a ver, para mucha gente, esto va a ser un puntazo. Si tú amaste La hipótesis del amor y te quedaste pensando "Uf, quiero esto mismo, pero con hombres lobo y que sea mil veces más picante", pues ¡felicidades!, encontraste tu libro ideal. A mí, la verdad, aunque lo disfruté un montón, las similitudes eran tan, pero tan obvias que a ratos sentía que estaba leyendo un remix de una historia que ya me encanta, y eso como que le quitó un poco la magia, ¿saben? Le restó impacto.

And this brings me to the romance, which goes from a fake deal, to a sort of 'friends with benefits,' and finally... to something more. Their chemistry is—wow—undeniable, and the book doesn't hold anything back, okay? The spicy scenes are super descriptive, and there are a lot of them. Now, whether this is a good or bad thing... well, that's up to each person. On one hand, the scenes are well-written and make perfect sense within this Omegaverse context, with all its instincts and everything… but on the other hand, I felt the relationship relied WAY TOO much on the physical side. It seemed like their alpha/omega chemistry was doing all the work, and not so much their emotional connection as people. I wanted a little more heart to balance out all that fire. But my biggest complaint, the thing that really bothered me, was the third-act conflict. Without spoilers, the reason they fight felt... super weak, very shoehorned in. Noah makes a decision to "protect her," according to him, but it's the classic cliché of the guy who just won't communicate to create drama. It kind of brought his character down for me because, at that point in the story, he should have trusted her more, damn it!

Luckily, Mackenzie is a great character and handles it well, but the conflict felt super frustrating, like an unnecessary bump in the road. So, who is this book for? It's for people who love the fake dating and grumpy x sunshine clichés but want them taken to the extreme, with a ton of paranormal fantasy. If you're a fan of Ali Hazelwood and you're not afraid to dive into werewolf romance, you'll absolutely love it, for sure. If you're looking for something paranormal, very, very spicy, without too much drama, and with a guaranteed happy ending, this is it, look no further! In the end, I give The Fake Mate a 3.5/5. It was a fun read, you'll fly through it, and it's incredibly spicy, with a concept I loved and characters you'll grow fond of right away. The humor and dialogue were the best parts, but the fact that it felt so similar to other books and relied more on the physical than the emotional meant it didn't become a new favorite. Y esto me lleva al romance, que va pasando de ser un trato falso, a ser como 'amigos con derechos', y al final, pues... a algo más.. la química entre ellos es ¡puf!, no se puede negar, y el libro no se guarda nada, ¿eh? Las escenas spicy son súper descriptivas y hay un montón. Ahora, si esto es bueno o malo... pues ya depende de cada quien, por un lado, las escenas están bien escritas y tienen todo el sentido del mundo en este rollo del Omegaverse, con sus instintos y todo.. pero por otro, sentí que la relación se apoyó DEMASIADO en la cama. Parecía que su química de alfa y omega era la que hacía todo el trabajo, y no tanto su conexión emocional, como personas.. yo quería un poquito más de corazón para balancear tanto fuego, pero mi queja más grande, lo que de verdad me hizo ruido, fue el conflicto del final.. sin spoilers, pero la razón por la que se pelean se me hizo... súper débil, muy metida con calzador. Noah toma una decisión para "protegerla", según él, pero es el clásico cliché del tipo que no habla nomás para crear drama.. me bajoneó un poco su personaje, porque a esas alturas de la historia, ¡ya era para que confiara más en ella, carajo!

Por suerte Mackenzie es una chica genial y lo sabe manejar, pero el conflicto se sintió súper frustrante, como un bache innecesario en el camino. Entonces, ¿para quién es este libro? Es para la gente que ama los clichés de fake dating y grumpy x sunshine, pero que los quiere llevados al máximo, con un montón de fantasía paranormal.. si eres fan de Ali Hazelwood y no te da miedo entrarle al romance con hombres lobo, te va a fascinar, seguro, si buscas algo paranormal, muy, muy spicy, sin tanto drama y con final feliz asegurado, ¡es este, no busques más! Al final, yo le doy a The Fake Mate unas 3.5/5. Fue una lectura divertida, te la echas de volada y es increíblemente picante, con una idea que me encantó y unos personajes a los que les agarras cariño al toque, el humor y los diálogos fueron lo mejorcito, pero el hecho de que se pareciera tanto a otros libros y que se apoyara más en lo físico que en lo emocional, hizo que no se convirtiera en un nuevo favorito, y bueno.. hasta aquí la reseña de hoy, espero que les haya gustado!
