I saw it a few years ago, it's called The Duke of Death and His Maid... and I'm not joking, I started watching it just like "let's see what's up" and I ended up hooked... it's one of those series that, I don't know, makes you feel good, cool! Let's see, put yourselves in a situation... imagine this: you're a boy, a duke, from a wealthy family, I mean, you have everything, right? But, BOOM! A witch puts a curse on you as a child... and not just any little thing, this curse makes any living being you touch... bang! die... yes, immediately... plants, animals, people... Imagine what a fucked up childhood he had, his own mother gets so scared that she banishes him to a mansion far away, in the middle of the forest, basically telling him not to even think about going near anyone.

So this poor young man, whom we almost always call "the Duke" (because his real name is a mystery, which gives him a fairy-tale feel), lives super isolated, everyone is afraid of him... sounds like it's going to be a dense and dark drama, right? And yes, obviously there are times when you feel his loneliness and the ugliness of his situation... but this is where the series takes a complete turn and that's why I fell in love with it, because he's not completely alone. He has his lifelong butler, Rob, who is somewhat absent-minded but super loyal, a unique character! And then there's Alice. Alice is his personal maid, and she's also been his friend since they were children, and listen carefully: she is totally and madly in love with the Duke, and he with her! What's the catch? They can't touch. Ever! Think about it: being madly in love with someone, living under the same roof, and knowing that a simple touch of hands—an accident!—could be fatal for that person... the tension is great.

Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos del anime, espero que estén bien, en esta ocasión les quiero hablar de una serie interesante, yo la ví hace algunos años, se trata de: The Duke of Death and His Maid.. y no es broma, empecé a verlo así como que "a ver qué onda" y terminé enganchado.. es de esas series que, no sé, te hacen sentir bien, ¡chévere! A ver, pónganse en situación.. imagínense esto: eres un chico, un duque, de familia con billete, o sea, lo tienes todo, ¿no? Pero, ¡PUM! Una bruja te echa una maldición de niño.. y no cualquier cosita, esta maldición hace que cualquier ser vivo que toques... ¡paf! se muere.. sí, al toque.. plantas, animalitos, personas.. Imagínense qué infancia jodida, su propia madre se asusta tanto que lo destierra a una mansión allá lejos, en medio del bosque, diciéndole básicamente que ni se le ocurra acercarse a nadie.

Así que este pobre joven, al que casi siempre le decimos "el Duque" (porque su nombre real es un misterio, lo que le da un toque de cuento), vive súper aislado, todos le tienen miedo.. suena a que va a ser un dramón denso y oscuro, ¿verdad? Y sí, obvio hay ratos en los que sientes su soledad y lo feo de su situación.. pero aquí es donde la serie le da un giro total y por eso me enamoró, porque no está completamente solo. Tiene a su mayordomo de toda la vida, Rob, que es medio distraído pero súper fiel, ¡un personaje único!, y luego está Alice. Alice es su doncella personal, y aparte es su amiga desde que eran niños, y escuchen bien: ella está total y perdidamente enamorada del Duque, ¡y él de ella! ¿Cuál es el truco? Que no pueden tocarse. ¡Nunca! Piénsenlo: estar enamoradísimo de alguien, viviendo bajo el mismo techo, y saber que un simple roce de manos, ¡un accidente!, podría ser mortal para esa persona.. la tensión es genial.

Alice is not your typical modest little princess, this girl is a master, a MASTER, of provocation... she is there all day long, and when I say all day long I mean ALL DAY LONG, flirting with the Duke, tickling him, getting as close as she can without touching him, and always with that mischievous little smile, it is a super playful dynamic, but sometimes it squeezes your heart a little, she knows that he can't, let's say, "hit her back" physically, so she uses it to her advantage in ways that make you laugh and are super seductive... yes, it has its touch of "fan service", but it feels so much a part of Alice, the way she shows affection and tries to get a reaction out of the poor Duke, who is rather cheeky and funny, it doesn't feel forced... it's like she wants to keep his spirits up, remind him that they love him, even if it's in this way that is so, ugh!, risky.

The chemistry they have is tender and genuine... it's this constant game of wanting to and not being able to, and it's the heart of the series, really, if you like those "joking girl" type characters, like Takagi-san, you're going to love Alice... And what blew my mind the most was how the series handles all of this, you have the romance, which is super cute, it hooks you in... you have the comedy, which comes a lot from Alice's pranks and how the Duke gets on her nerves, or from the other characters who are a case... then, of course, there's the fantasy part, with the curse, the witches, and that old-European atmosphere. At first I thought that with such a dramatic premise, it was going to go too far towards the suffering, but the truth is that it is quite light, it is very enjoyable and it is very funny... it is not afraid of the sad moments, but it does not stay stuck there...

Ok, let's talk about the subject that some people are concerned about: the animation... the series uses 3D for the characters, on some handmade 2D backgrounds that are beautiful, I know, I know, CGI anime sometimes divides opinions... yes, at first, I was like: "Hmm, this is... different" the characters' movements sometimes feel a little stiff if you compare them to traditional 2D, and the faces, especially Viola's, the Duke's sister, sometimes looked kind of... strange, like they took you out of it for a second. BUT, and this is a big BUT, you get used to it quickly... the studio, J.C. The staff puts so much love into the designs that it all works out quite well in the end. Alice, in particular, still looks expressive and adorable, and the Duke, who is more reserved, also comes across well. For me, the story and the characters captivated me so much that the animation style stopped being an issue at all. In fact, I think it gives the series a distinctive touch.

Alice no es la típica princesita modosita, esta chica es una maestra, pero MAESTRA, de la provocación.. está todo el santo día, y cuando digo todo el día es TODO EL DÍA, coqueteándole al Duque, buscándole cosquillas, acercándose lo más que puede sin llegar a tocarlo, y siempre con esa sonrisita pícara, es una dinámica súper juguetona, pero que a veces te aprieta un poquito el corazón, ella sabe que él no puede, digamos, "devolverle el golpe" físicamente, así que lo usa a su favor de unas maneras que te matan de risa y son súper seductoras.. sí, tiene su toque de "fan service", pero es que se siente tan parte de Alice, de cómo ella demuestra cariño e intenta sacarle alguna reacción al pobre Duque, que es más bien descarado y divertido, no se siente forzado.. es como si quisiera mantenerle el ánimo arriba, recordarle que lo quieren, aunque sea de esta forma tan, ¡uff!, arriesgada.

La química que tienen es tierna y genuina.. es este jueguito constante de querer y no poder, y es el corazón de la serie, de verdad, si les gustan esos personajes tipo "chica bromista", tipo Takagi-san, Alice les va a fascinar..Y lo que más me voló la cabeza fue cómo la serie maneja todo esto, tienes el romance, que es súper lindo, te engancha.. tienes la comedia, que sale mucho de las travesuras de Alice y cómo el Duque se pone de los nervios, o de los otros personajes que son un caso.. luego, claro, está la parte de fantasía, con la maldición, las brujas, y ese ambiente como de Europa de antes. Al principio pensé que con una premisa tan dramática, se iba a ir mucho por el lado del sufrimiento, pero la verdad es que es bastante ligera, se disfruta un montón y es muy divertida.. no le tiene miedo a los momentos tristes, pero no se queda pegada ahí..

Ok, hablemos del tema que a algunos les hace ruido: la animación.. la serie usa 3D, para los personajes, sobre unos fondos 2D hechos a mano que son una belleza, ya sé, ya sé, el anime en CGI a veces divide opiniones.. sí, al principio, yo estaba como: "Mmm, esto está... diferente" los movimientos de los personajes a veces se sienten un poquito tiesos si los comparas con el 2D de toda la vida, y las caras, sobre todo de Viola, la hermana del Duque, a veces se veían medio… raras, como que te sacaban un poco de onda por un segundo. PERO, y esto es un gran PERO, te acostumbras rápido.. el estudio, J.C. Staff le mete tanto cariño a los diseños que al final funciona bastante bien.. Alice, sobre todo, se sigue viendo expresiva y adorable, y el Duque, que es más reservado, también queda bien.. para mí, la historia y los personajes me atraparon tanto que el estilo de animación dejó de ser un problema en nada.. de hecho, creo que le da un toque distintivo a la serie.

And it’s not just jokes, there’s a real plot that runs throughout the entire series, which is how they manage to break the Duke’s curse… this is where the fantasy gets good, it starts to shine with everything! Little by little we learn more about the witch who cursed him, we get more into the history of his family, and we meet other magical beings, like a couple of witches, Caph and Zain… Caph is this tsundere witch who is a laugh riot, and Zain is like her calmer friend and a little, let’s say, crazy! They end up being allies you wouldn’t expect and they give the series a completely new vibe… I liked how the story grew little by little, showing you more of the world and all the lore, but without losing sight of the main couple, that’s key!

Each chapter adds something to you, it removes another layer of the mystery of the curse, the secondary characters are few but what characters! Rob, the butler, is used a lot as a joke with his old-man antics, but he has a heart of gold... then there's Viola, the Duke's younger sister, she's a bit absent-minded and crazy, but in a funny way, because of Rob! Imagine! She also genuinely cares for her brother and uses the visits as an escape from her super controlling mother. Their scenes are always funny... Caph and Zain, the witches I told you about... were a great addition! They bring more of that magical world and their own crazy relationship, Goths contribute their part and never steal the spotlight from the Duke and Alice.

The atmosphere of the series is another great point... the illustrators went all out creating this fantasy world that draws you in... the mansion, although isolated, also feels warm, especially when Alice walks around... the surrounding forest can give you a little bit of something, a bit of mystery, which goes perfectly with the whole "cursed duke" vibe. And the music! The soundtrack is a gem, beautiful! It perfectly captures that vibe of loneliness, the darkness of the curse, but also the tender romance... that's a nice touch, people! The opening and ending songs are sung by the same main voice actors, Natsuki Hanae (the Duke) and Ayumi Mano (Alice). The OP is more lively, reflecting the playfulness they have despite the curse, while the ED, sung only by Alice, is like a love letter to the Duke, beautiful and incredibly heartfelt... it perfectly sums up the heart of the series.

Y no es solo chistes, hay una trama de verdad que va por toda la serie, que es cómo le hacen para romper la maldición del Duque.. acá es donde la fantasía se pone buena, ¡empieza a brillar con todo! Poco a poco vamos sabiendo más de la bruja que lo maldijo, nos metemos más en el rollo de su familia, y conocemos a otros seres mágicos, como un par de brujas, Caph y Zain.. Caph es esta bruja tsundere que es un cague de risa, y Zain es como su compa más tranqui y un poquito, digamos, ¡loquito!. Terminan siendo aliados que ni te esperas y le meten una onda completamente nueva a la serie.. me gustó cómo la historia fue creciendo de a poquito, mostrándote más del mundo y todo el lore, pero sin perder de vista a la pareja principal, ¡eso es clave!

Cada capítulo te va sumando algo, te va quitando una capa más del misterio de la maldición, los personajes secundarios son poquitos pero ¡qué personajes! Rob, el mayordomo, lo usan mucho para el chiste con sus mañas de viejito, pero tiene un corazón de oro.. luego está Viola, la hermana menor del Duque, es un poco despistada y está loquísima, pero de forma graciosa, ¡por Rob! ¡Imagínense! También se preocupa de verdad por su hermano y usa las visitas como un escape de su mamá que es súper controladora. Sus escenas siempre son divertidas.. Caph y Zain, las brujas que les dije.. fueron un añadido genial! Traen más de ese mundo mágico y su propia relación que es un desmadre, godos aportan lo suyo y nunca le roban cámara al Duque y a Alice.

La atmósfera de la serie es otro puntazo.. los que dibujaron se la rifaron creando este mundo de fantasía que te atrapa.. la mansión, aunque es un lugar donde está aislado, también se siente cálida, sobre todo cuando Alice anda por ahí.. el bosque de alrededor puede darte un poquito de cosa, de misterio, que le va perfecto a toda la onda del "duque maldito". ¡Y la música! La banda sonora es una joya, ¡preciosa! Captura perfecto esa onda de soledad, la oscuridad de la maldición, pero también el romance tierno.. acá un detallazo, gente! El opening y el ending los cantan los mismos actores de voz principales, Natsuki Hanae (el Duque) y Ayumi Mano (Alice). El OP es más movido, reflejando ese juego que tienen a pesar de la maldición, mientras que el ED, cantado solo por Alice, es como una carta de amor al Duque, hermosa y súper sentida.. te resume perfecto el corazón de la serie.

Look, people, even though the basis of the curse is tragic, it's a feel-good series, a way to feel at ease... it has that magic of making you smile, of making you laugh, and suddenly, boom!, it touches your heartstrings, it reaches your heart, all in the same episode! It shows you how to find the good in the bad, that even in the worst situations, love and humor can prevail. It's one of those series that, as they say, "cleanses your soul," really! It's not very convoluted, it doesn't try to be super deep or intense, but what it does, it does great! It's simply... enjoyable, in the best sense of the word... I, honestly, expected a little more of a downer, maybe, because of how it all starts, but the constant joy and that strength, that good vibe from Alice, totally won me over!

It exceeded what I expected in terms of comedy... so, if I had to give it a grade, I'd give it a well-placed 7.5/10! The animation might be a bit off-putting for some at first, but the humor, the lovely characters, the music, and that gentle feeling it leaves you with, make it a gem! If you like romantic comedies with a twist, or if you're a fan of series with those annoying-but-loving-girl dynamics, you have to see it no matter what! It's entertaining, it's tender, and honestly, it's a really good time watching it... and well, that's it for today's review. I hope you liked it, take care! Bye bye!

A ver, gente, aunque la base de la maldición es trágica, es una serie para sentirse bien, para estar a gusto.. tiene esa magia de hacerte sonreír, de hacerte reír, y de repente, ¡pum!, te toca la fibra, te llega al cora, ¡todo en el mismo capítulo! Te muestra cómo encontrarle lo bueno a lo malo, que incluso en las peores situaciones, el amor y el humor pueden salir adelante, es de esas series que, como dicen por ahí, "te limpian el alma", ¡de verdad! No es muy enredada, no se quiere hacer la súper profunda o intensa, pero lo que hace, ¡lo hace de diez! Es simplemente… disfrutable, en el mejor sentido de la palabra.. yo, la verdad, esperaba un poquito más de bajón, quizás, por cómo empieza todo, pero la alegría constante y esa fuerza, esa buena onda de Alice, ¡me compraron totalmente!

Superó lo que esperaba en cuanto a la comedia.. así que, si le tengo que poner nota, ¡le doy un 7.5/10 bien puesto! La animación capaz que a algunos les choca un poquito al principio, pero el humor, los personajes que son un amor, la música y esa sensación suave que te deja, ¡la hacen una joyita! Si les gustan las comedias románticas con un toque diferente, o si son fans de series con esas dinámicas de la chica que molesta pero con cariño, ¡tienen que verla sí o sí! Es entretenida, es tierna, y la verdad, se pasa un muy buen rato viéndola.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy, espero que les haya gustado, cuidense! Bye bye!
