Hello everyone, dear community of The Anime Realm, I hope you are doing super well today. On this occasion, I want to talk about a very unique anime I finished a while ago called: Mieruko-chan. And look, if you've seen a poster or a trailer, you're probably thinking, "Oh, I know what this is about," but let me tell you, it's much weirder and more incredible than it seems. I mean, I went in expecting one thing and came out with my mind tied in a knot, but in a good way. Picture this, put yourself in this situation: you're a super normal high school girl, your life is, well, the usual: going to school, gossiping with your best friend about nonsense, and maybe scaring your little brother with ghost stories... everything's chill, nothing special. Suddenly, one day, just like that, BAM! You start seeing... things. I'm not talking about blurry vision, no. I'm talking about seeing disgusting monsters, horrible specters, and ghosts that would scare you to death everywhere—on the street, in your classroom, on the bus... even in your own bathroom when you just want some peace!

Well, that's the nightmare that befalls our protagonist, Miko Yotsuya... and here, people, this is where the anime grabbed me and didn't let go. Because, let's be real, what would we do? Scream, run for our lives, find a shaman, move to another continent! But not Miko. In the midst of total panic, she comes up with an idea that is both brilliant and terrifying: "What if I pretend I don't see them? What if I act like they don't exist? Maybe they'll leave me alone." And that, THAT is what Mieruko-chan is about. Forget about her getting superpowers to beat up ghosts like in Jujutsu Kaisen, not at all! No... this is the story of a girl who is scared to death and has to put on the best poker face in the universe, 24/7. That idea, man, is super fresh, it's brilliant. The real terror of the series isn't so much the creatures (which we'll get to, because wow...), but the stress Miko experiences internally. You see, we experience everything through her eyes, you know?

A hideous ghost with twenty eyes can sit right in front of you at the table and whisper, "Can you see me?", and she has to keep eating her bread as if nothing is happening. On the outside, you see her and think, "What a serious, distant girl," but on the inside, the anime shows you that she's dying of fear, on the verge of tears, begging for it all to stop. That contrast, that double-sidedness, is the engine of the whole story and what makes you connect with her so deeply. Seriously, you spend the whole time holding your breath with her, praying for the monster to get bored and leave already.

Hola a todos, querida comunidad de The Anime Realm, espero que se encuentren súper bien el día de hoy, en esta ocasión les quiero hablar de un anime muy único, le termine hace ya algún tiempo, se llama: Mieruko-chan y, miren, si ustedes vieron algún póster o un tráiler, seguro piensan "ah, ya sé de qué va", pero déjenme decirles que la cosa es mucho más rara y más increíble de lo que parece.. o sea, yo entré esperando una cosa y salí con la mente hecha un nudo, pero para bien. Imagínense esto, pónganse en esta situación: eres una chica de prepa, súper normal, tu vida es, pues, lo de siempre: ir a la escuela, chismear con tu mejor amiga de cualquier tontería, y chance asustar a tu hermano chiquito con historias de fantasmas.. todo tranqui, todo equis, de repente, un día, así de la nada, ¡PUM! Empiezas a ver... cosas.. no hablo de ver borroso, no. Hablo de ver unos monstruos asquerosos, unos espectros horribles y fantasmas que te cagas de miedo por todos lados, en la calle, en tu salón, en el bus… ¡hasta en tu propio baño cuando nomás quieres estar en paz!

Pues esa es la pesadilla que le cae encima a la prota, a Miko Yotsuya.. y aquí, gente, aquí es donde el anime me agarró y no me soltó. Porque, a ver, ¿qué haríamos nosotros? ¡Gritar, salir corriendo, buscar un chamán, irnos a vivir a otro continente! Pues Miko no, en medio del pánico total, se le ocurre algo que es, a la vez, una genialidad y algo terrorífico: “¿Y si finjo que no los veo? ¿Y si actúo como si no existieran? A lo mejor así me dejan tranquila”.. y de eso, de ESO va Mieruko-chan, olvídense de que le van a dar superpoderes para madrearse a los fantasmas tipo Jujutsu Kaisen, ¡para nada! No.. esta es la historia de una chica que está muerta de miedo y que tiene que poner la mejor cara de póker del universo, 24/7.. esa idea, uf, es súper fresca, es una genialidad, el verdadero terror de la serie no son tanto los bichos (que ya llegaremos a eso, porque uff…), sino el estrés que vive Miko por dentro. Es que todo lo vemos desde sus ojos, ¿me entienden?

Un fantasma espantoso con veinte ojos se te puede sentar enfrente en la mesa y susurrarte “¿Puedes verme?”, y ella tiene que seguir comiendo su pan como si nada.. por fuera, la ves y piensas "qué chica tan seria, tan distante", pero por dentro, el anime te muestra que se está muriendo de miedo, a nada de llorar, suplicando que todo pare.. ese contraste, esa doble cara, es el motor de toda la historia y lo que hace que conectes con ella durísimo. De verdad, te la pasas aguantando la respiración con ella, rogando para que el monstruo se aburra y se largue de una vez.

Okay, let's talk about the genres, because this is where things get really weird, but in a cool way. It's marketed as a horror-comedy, but in the first few episodes, I was like, "What the hell am I watching?". Everything looks super colorful, like one of those chill, slice-of-life anime, you know? You have Miko and her friend Hana, who is pure good vibes, living their day, and then out of nowhere, bam!, the camera shifts slightly and they hit you with one of the most disgusting and twisted creatures I've seen in a long time. The change is... brutal! The series plays with horror, but it's not going for the easy jump scare to make you leap out of your seat. Instead, it aims to make you uncomfortable, to create a tension that doesn't go away. It's more of a comedy of discomfort, where the humor comes from the ridiculous situations Miko gets into to maintain her act. And speaking of those creatures... man, what a thing!

The ghost designs are easily some of the best in anime. They really throw you off. Forget about the ghost with a sheet; here, they are amalgamations of bodies, deformed faces, and designs that look like they came straight out of a Japanese horror artist's worst nightmare. They are grotesque, full of detail, and give you that "this should not exist" vibe. The art in that aspect is amazing and gives the series a style you recognize instantly. If you add to that the brilliant sound design, which knows perfectly when to use silence to make you even more nervous, well, the experience during the horror moments is absolutely top-notch.

A ver, y hablemos de los géneros, porque aquí la cosa se pone bien rara, pero de la forma chida, te la venden como comedia de terror, pero en los primeros capítulos yo estaba como “¿qué carajos estoy viendo?”. Es que todo se ve súper colorido, como un anime de esos tranquilos de la vida diaria, ¿sabes? Tienes a Miko y a su amiga Hana, que es pura buena vibra, viviendo su día, y de la nada, ¡zas!, la cámara se mueve tantito y te clavan una de las criaturas más asquerosas y retorcidas que he visto en mucho tiempo, el cambio es… ¡brutal! La serie le juega al terror, pero no busca el susto fácil para que brinques de la silla, sino que busca ponerte incómodo, crear una tensión que no se quita.. es más una comedia de la incomodidad, donde la gracia sale de las situaciones ridículas en las que Miko se mete para mantener su actuación y hablando de esas criaturas… uff, gente, ¡qué cosa!

El diseño de los fantasmas es, fácil, de lo mejorcito del anime, de verdad que te sacan de onda, olvídense del fantasma con la sábana; aquí son mezclas de cuerpos, caras deformes y diseños que parecen salidos de la peor pesadilla de un artista de horror japonés. Son grotescos, llenísimos de detalles y te dan esa vibra de “esto no debería existir”.. el arte en ese aspecto es una pasada y le da a la serie un estilo que la reconoces al toque.. si a eso le sumas que el sonido es una genialidad, que saben perfecto cuándo usar el silencio para que te pongas más nervioso, pues la experiencia en los momentos de miedo es de primerísimo nivel.

But, but, but... here comes the "but," people... and it's a big "but," okay? The series has a problem: the blasted fan service. Look, don't get me wrong, fan service doesn't bother me if it's well-placed or part of the show's joke... but in Mieruko-chan, especially at the beginning, it feels super out of place, like it has nothing to do with anything. You're in the most tense scene imaginable, Miko is locked in the bathroom, a horrible ghost is outside, the music has you on edge... and suddenly, BAM! The camera lingers on the protagonist's butt at an angle that makes you go, "Seriously?". Come on! It completely pulls you out of the moment. I mean, all the tension they built up so well... poof!, it's gone to hell. It's as if the director didn't trust their own story and said, "Hmmm, we need to add something extra so people don't get bored."

The good news, and this is key, is that they tone it down a lot as the season progresses, as if they realized that Miko's story and the mystery surrounding her are more than enough to carry the show on their own. Because in the end, this is really all about Miko. And her development, man, it's one of those that starts slow, but by the end, you're like, "that was so cool." We see her go from being frozen with fear to starting to do little things, small but incredibly brave, to protect the people she cares about, all while continuing to play dumb with the monsters.

It's a growth of endurance, of mental strength, and that makes her an incredible protagonist. She's not the hero who throws punches; she's the hero who endures everything... a champion of emotional survival. The other characters also add a lot. Her best friend, Hana, is a ray of sunshine, one of those people with incredible energy who is completely clueless about what's going on... but, curiously, it seems she has so much... I don't know... "life force" that the little ghosts are drawn to her like moths to a flame, and of course, that makes Miko's job even harder. And then there's Yulia, another girl who also sees ghosts, but only the lame, weak ones... so she thinks she's a top-tier exorcist and misinterprets everything Miko does, thinking she's a super-powerful psychic because she never gets scared. The moments between those two are some of the funniest in the series.

Pero, pero, pero… aquí viene el “pero”, gente.. es un “pero” grande, ¿eh? La serie tiene un pedo: el bendito fan service, a ver, que no se me malentienda, a mí el fan service no me molesta si está bien puesto o si es parte del chiste del show.. pero en Mieruko-chan, sobre todo al principio, se siente súper fuera de lugar, como que no tiene nada que ver, estás en la escena más tensa del mundo, Miko encerrada en el baño, un fantasma horrible afuera, la música te tiene con los pelos de punta… y de repente, ¡ZAS! La cámara se te queda pegada en el trasero de la prota en un ángulo que dices “¿En serio?”. ¡No manches! Te saca por completo de la onda.. o sea, toda la tensión que construyeron tan bien… ¡puf!, se va al carajo, es como si el director no confiara en su propia historia y dijera “mhhh, hay que meterle algo más pa’ que la gente no se aburra”.

La buena noticia, y esto es clave, es que le van bajando un montón a eso conforme avanza la temporada, como si se dieran cuenta de que la historia de Miko y el misterio que la rodea jalan más que suficiente por sí solos.. porque al final, de lo que de verdad se trata esto es de Miko. Y su desarrollo, uf, es de esos que van lentito, pero que al final dices “qué chido”, la vemos pasar de estar tiesa del miedo a empezar a hacer cositas, pequeñas pero súper valientes, para cuidar a la gente que quiere, y todo sin dejar de hacerse la loca con los monstruos.

Es un crecimiento de aguantar, de fuerza mental, y eso la hace una prota increíble, ella no es la heroína que tira madrazos, es la heroína que aguanta de todo.. una campeona de la supervivencia emocional, los demás personajes también suman un montón. Su mejor amiga, Hana, es un sol, una de esas personas con una energía increíble que no se entera de nada de lo que pasa.. pero, curiosamente, parece que tiene tanta… no sé… tanta “energía vital” que los fantasmas chiquitos se le pegan como moscas a la miel, y claro, eso le complica todavía más la chamba a Miko. Y luego tenemos a Yulia, que es otra chica que también ve fantasmas, pero nomás ve a los chafitas, a los débiles.. entonces se siente la mera mera exorcista y malinterpreta todo lo que hace Miko, piensa que es una psíquica súper poderosa porque nunca se asusta, los momentos entre ellas dos son de lo más gracioso de la serie.

But what really surprised me, what left me thinking "interesting," is that beneath this whole "girl who pretends not to see" concept, there's a much bigger story being built, piece by piece. The anime drops you clues, like breadcrumbs, that leave you thinking about a lot of things. Like, hey, why did this suddenly happen to Miko? Or what's the deal with her friend Hana's aura? And then, man, there's the whole thing with the teacher, a guy who is always surrounded by some incredibly creepy, cat-like spirits. The mystery of who this dude is becomes a super important part of the plot towards the end. When the last episode ends, you're left with the feeling that this was just the introduction, the prologue to something much bigger and more intense. They leave you with so many questions, so much potential, that you don't just want a second season, you need one!

The anime went from being a weird horror-comedy to a well-crafted mystery with characters you grow really fond of. So, do I recommend it? Yes! Absolutely! But be warned, you need to know what you're getting into. This isn't your typical jump-scare horror anime. It's more of a psychological thriller, a comedy of discomfort, and a slice of life with ghosts, all mixed together. The main idea is brilliant, Miko's character growth is super cool, and the monster design is amazing. If you can forgive the clumsy fan service at the beginning, you'll find one of the most original and entertaining anime to come out recently. In the end, I give it an 8/10. It's not perfect, it's not a masterpiece, especially because of that slip-up with the fan service, but its concept is so good and so well-executed that it elevates the entire series. It entertains you, it makes you tense, it gets a few laughs out of you... I liked it. And well, that's all for today, take care, and I'll see you in the next reviews, bye-bye!

Pero lo que de verdad me sorprendió, lo que me dejó así de "interesante", es que debajo de toda esta idea de "la chica que se hace la que no ve", hay una historia mucho más grande que se va armando poquito a poquito, es que el anime te va soltando pistas, así, como migajas de pan, que te dejan pensando un buen de cosas. Como, a ver, ¿por qué de la nada a Miko le pasó esto? ¿O qué onda con el aura de su amiga Hana? Y luego, ¡uff!, está el tema del profesor, un tipo que siempre anda rodeado de unos espíritus con forma de gato que dan un mal rollo increíble, y el misterio de quién es este cabrón se vuelve una parte súper importante de la trama ya para el final, cuando se acaba el último capítulo, te quedas con la idea de que esto fue nomás la introducción, el prólogo para algo mucho más cabrón.. te dejan con tantas preguntas, con tanto potencial, que una segunda temporada no es que la quieras, ¡es que la necesitas!

El anime pasó de ser una comedia de terror medio rara a un misterio bien armado con personajes a los que, les agarras un montón de cariño.. entonces ¿la recomiendo? ¡sí! ¡Con todo! Pero ojo, tienes que saber a qué le tiras.. este no es el anime de terror de sustos fáciles que te hace brincar, es más bien de suspenso psicológico, una comedia de lo incómodo y un slice of life con fantasmas, todo revuelto, la idea principal es una genialidad, cómo va creciendo Miko está súper chido, y el diseño de los monstruos es una pasada. Si le puedes perdonar el fan service medio torpe del principio, te vas a encontrar con uno de los animes más originales y entretenidos que han salido últimamente.. al final, yo le pongo un 8/10. No es perfecta, no es una obra maestra, sobre todo por ese resbalón con el fan service, pero su idea es tan buena y está tan bien hecha que levanta toda la serie.. te entretiene, te pone tenso, te saca unas risas.. me gustó.
