Hello everyone, dear friends of the Hive Book Club, I hope you are doing great today. On this occasion, I want to share my personal opinions on a book I recently finished, Merciless by Danielle Vega, and I have to talk about this because it's one of those books that grips you badly while you're reading it, but as soon as I closed it, like a thousand frustrations popped up. I devoured it in a couple of nights, literally staying up until the early hours to see what would happen next, but now that it's over... I don't know, I feel super conflicted. The premise is basically Mean Girls mixed with The Exorcist, and I swear there's no better way to describe it. It's about Sophia, the new girl who arrives in a small town with a somewhat shady past. To fit in, she joins the popular clique, who are super religious and led by Riley, a girl who is charismatic but extremely intense.

This group gets it into their heads that Brooklyn, the school's weird girl, is possessed by a demon and needs their "help." So they decide the only solution is to perform an exorcism, and from there, everything goes to hell in a chaos of blood and madness. Be warned, the book starts with a content warning, and it's no joke; if you're easily disturbed by gore or very graphic violence, you might want to skip this one. But anyway, let's start with what I did like. The pacing, for the most part, doesn't give you a moment's rest. Once the girls put their plan into action and everything moves to an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere, it's impossible to put the book down.

It has that addictive quality of making you want to turn the page nonstop, just to see what new atrocity is going to happen next. Vega is a master at writing torture scenes, that more visceral kind of terror. If you guys like that subgenre, like Saw or Hostel, where the horror is super physical, wow, the way it's written is brutal. In fact, there are a couple of scenes so graphic, so incredibly graphic, that I literally had to put the book down for a minute and take a breath because my stomach turned. It's not so much psychological terror, but the kind that makes you cringe, that you feel as if it were happening to you.

Hola a todos, querida amigos de Hive Book Club, espero que hoy estén super bien, en esta ocasión, les quiero comentar mis opiniones personales sobre un libro que termine hace poco, se trata de Merciless de Danielle Vega y tengo que hablar de esto porque, es de esos libros que te atrapan mal mientras lo estás leyendo, pero apenas lo cerré, me salieron como mil frustraciones, me lo devoré en un par de noches, literal, me quedé despierto hasta las tantas para ver qué más pasaba, pero ahora que se acabó... no sé, me siento súper en conflicto. La premisa es, básicamente, Chicas Pesadas mezclado con El Exorcista, y les juro que no hay mejor forma de describirlo.. la cosa va de Sophia, la chica nueva que llega a un pueblo chico con un pasado medio turbio, para encajar, se junta con el grupito de las populares, que son mega religiosas y están lideradas por Riley, una chica que es carismática pero súper intensa.

Y a este grupito se le mete en la cabeza que Brooklyn, la chica rara de la escuela, está poseída por un demonio y que necesita su "ayuda". Así que deciden que la única solución es hacerle un exorcismo, y a partir de ahí, todo se va al demonio en un caos de sangre y locura.. ojo, que el libro empieza con una advertencia de contenido fuerte, y no es chiste, si eres de los que se impresionan fácil con el gore o la violencia muy gráfica, mejor déjalo pasar. Pero bueno, empecemos con lo que sí me gustó.. el ritmo, en su mayoría, no te da ni un respiro, una vez que las chicas arman su plan y todo se muda a una casa abandonada en medio de la nada, es imposible soltar el libro.

Tiene esa cosa adictiva de querer pasar la página sin parar, solo para ver qué nueva barbaridad va a pasar.. es que Vega es una maestra para escribir las escenas de tortura, de ese terror más viscera, si a ustedes les gusta ese subgénero, onda Saw u Hostel, donde el horror es súper físico, uff, la forma en que está escrito es brutal.. de hecho, hay un par de escenas tan gráficas, pero tan gráficas, que literal tuve que bajar el libro un minuto y tomar aire porque se me revolvió el estómago.. no es tanto un terror psico

But well, this is also where one of my biggest problems begins. The book relies so much on shock and gore, on the graphic, that it forgets to be genuinely scary. There were moments when I understood what the author was trying to do, you know? The typical jump scare or that slowly building dread, but it just didn't feel that way while reading. It was like I was reading the script of a horror movie, the description of the scene, instead of feeling the tension myself. A good horror book creates an atmosphere, it gets under your skin in a very different way than a movie, and this book felt like it was constantly trying to be a movie, trading suspense for sheer visual impact.

My other major issue was with the characters. For such an intense story to work, you need to feel something for the people living it, and honestly, that didn't happen for me. Our protagonist, Sophia, is, unfortunately, the flattest of them all. We're told she has this dark past, but most of the time she's a super bland, uninteresting observer. She makes frustratingly passive decisions and, for a girl who has moved so much, she gives in to peer pressure in a way that is just not believable, with almost no resistance. I never felt like I was on her side because I barely knew who she was. The other girls, like Riley, the religious fanatic, had glimmers of being fascinating, complex characters, but they remained super superficial. They seemed like caricatures rather than real people, which made their extreme actions feel less terrifying and more… well, ridiculous.

And that leads me to the credibility problem. Look, I can believe in demons and exorcisms, no problem. What I struggled with were the actions of the humans. There are moments and lines of dialogue so exaggerated and nonsensical that they completely pulled me out of the story. Instead of being horrified, I found myself rolling my eyes or almost laughing at the absurdity of the situation. It's hard to be scared when a part of your brain is screaming, "No one would ever do that! It makes no sense!" And to top it off, there were several subplots and character details that were just mentioned and then... abandoned. They never went anywhere, leaving frustrating gaps in the story that felt as if the author couldn't be bothered to finish writing them.

Pero bueno, aquí es también donde empieza uno de mis problemas más grandes.. el libro depende tanto del shock y del gore, de lo gráfico, que se le olvida dar miedo de verdad, había momentos en los que yo captaba lo que la autora quería hacer, ¿saben? El típico susto repentino o ese terror que va creciendo de a poquito, pero nomás no se sentía así al leerlo, era como si estuviera leyendo el guion de una película de terror, la descripción de la escena, en lugar de sentir la tensión en carne propia.. un buen libro de terror te crea una atmósfera, se te mete bajo la piel de una forma muy diferente al cine, y este libro sentía que todo el tiempo estaba tratando de ser una película, cambiando el suspenso por el puro impacto visual.

Mi otro gran problema fue con los personajes.. para que una historia tan intensa funcione, necesitas sentir algo por la gente que la está viviendo, y la verdad es que a mí no me pasó, nuestra protagonista, Sophia, es, por desgracia, la más plana de todos. Nos dicen que tiene este pasado oscuro, pero la mayor parte del tiempo es una observadora súper sosa, sin chiste.. toma decisiones que frustran de lo pasiva que es y, para ser una chica que se ha mudado tanto, cede a la presión de grupo de una forma que no te la crees, casi sin poner resistencia. Nunca sentí que estaba de su lado porque apenas y sabía quién era, las otras chicas, como Riley, la fanática religiosa, tenían destellos de que podían ser personajes fascinantes, complejos, pero se quedaron súper superficiales.. parecían caricaturas en lugar de personas reales, lo que hizo que sus acciones extremas se sintieran menos aterradoras y más… pues, ridículas.

Y eso me lleva al problema de la credibilidad.. miren, yo me puedo creer lo de los demonios y los exorcismos, sin problema, con lo que batallé fue con las acciones de los humanos.. hay momentos y diálogos tan exagerados y sin sentido que me sacaban por completo de la historia. En lugar de estar horrorizado, me encontraba volteando los ojos o casi riéndome de lo absurdo de la situación, es difícil tener miedo cuando una parte de tu cerebro está gritando: "Nadie haría eso jamás! ¡No tiene ningún sentido!". Y para rematar, hubo varias tramas secundarias y detalles de personajes que nomás se mencionaron y luego... se abandonaron, nunca llegaron a nada, dejando unos huecos frustrantes en la historia que se sintieron como si a la autora le hubiera dado flojera terminar de escribir.

So, the million-dollar question: who is this book for? I would say that if you love those B-horror movies, the ones that are so bad they're good, you know, the ones you watch with friends to laugh and get grossed out by the super ridiculous gore, then look, you're going to have a great time with The Merciless. It's a super fast, entertaining read with some unforgettably disgusting parts, and the best thing is you don't have to think too much about it. It's basically a slasher movie in book form, fun but hollow.

Buuut, if you're looking for more psychological terror, with deep characters or a well-constructed plot, this book will most likely frustrate you as much as it did me. At the end of the day, I give it about 2.8 stars. It earns points because yes, it's entertaining, and the ending honestly left me intrigued, curious to know what happens in the sequel. But the flat characters, the over-the-top plot, and the massive plot holes... they just dragged down the whole quality of the experience for me. I didn't hate it, but I was really angry about all the wasted potential, so I can't say I truly liked it either. It was an entertaining ride while it lasted, but honestly, it's a super forgettable book. And well, that's it for today's review, friends. See you later! I hope you liked it, take care!

Entonces, la pregunta del millón: ¿para quién es este libro? Yo diría que si a ti te encantan esas películas de terror de serie B, de esas que son tan malas que son buenas, ya sabes, las que ves con tus amigos para reírte y asquearte con el gore súper ridículo, entonces, mira, te la vas a pasar genial con The Merciless.. es una lectura súper rápida, entretenida, con unas partes asquerosas que no se te olvidan, y lo mejor es que no tienes que pensarle mucho, es básicamente una película slasher hecha libro, divertida pero hueca.

Peeero, si lo que buscas es un terror más psicológico, con personajes profundos o una trama bien amarrada, lo más seguro es que este libro te va a frustrar tanto como a mí.. al final del día, yo le doy unas 2.8 estrellas, se gana puntos porque sí, es entretenido, y el final la neta es que me dejó picado, me dio curiosidad por saber qué pasa en la secuela, pero los personajes planos, lo exageradísima que es la trama y los hoyos argumentales tan grandes que tiene... le bajaron toda la calidad a la experiencia para mí. No lo odié, pero me dio mucho coraje todo el potencial que se desperdició, así que tampoco puedo decir que me haya gustado de verdad.. fue un viaje entretenido mientras duró, pero la verdad, es un libro súper olvidable..y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy amigos, nos veremos luego!
