Hello everyone, dear Hive Book Club community, I hope you're having a great day. On this occasion, I'm here to bring you a new review with my thoughts. After hearing everyone rave about The Infernal Devices for what felt like a thousand years, I said, "alright, let's see what it's about," and started reading Clockwork Angel. I already knew it was the prequel to The Mortal Instruments, a series I've honestly had my ups and downs with. But everyone kept telling me that this trilogy was something else, that here we see Cassandra Clare in her prime, and honestly, the fact that it was set in Victorian London really caught my attention. So, I started it and… I'm so glad I did, really!

This book has a completely different vibe; it hooked me from the very first minute. From the beginning, the setting is… wow, just brutal. We're in London, 1878, and you can almost feel the fog on your face and hear the carriages passing by. There we meet our protagonist, Tessa Gray, who has just arrived by ship from New York to live with her brother after her aunt died. But, obviously, from the moment she sets foot on dry land, everything goes to hell. She's immediately kidnapped by some very sinister women who call themselves the Dark Sisters, and poof, her world is turned upside down. This beginning is super dark, it gives you a bad vibe, you know? Because they don't just lock her up; they subject her to intense "training" to awaken a power she didn't even know she had.

It turns out Tessa can shapeshift, meaning she can become another person, living or dead, just by touching something that belonged to them. This ability is so unique that it becomes the center of the whole plot. The scenes where they torture her to learn to use her power are intense; they truly break your heart and you connect with her right away. I feel that Clare's writing style is much more polished here. I mean, in The Mortal Instruments, I sometimes felt she just info-dumped everything on us, as if it were a lecture. Not here. Here, the world-building is woven into the story much more organically. You learn about the Shadowhunters, the Downworlders, and the Clave through what the characters do and say, not because they spell it all out for you.

And that makes you get fully immersed in the story; it's much more fluid. That said, the plot starts off as a slow burn. After Tessa is rescued and arrives at the London Institute, the book takes its time to introduce all the characters and to plant the main mystery: who is the Magister, this super dark figure who wants Tessa for his evil plans? And more importantly: who… or what… is Tessa? The fact that not even she knows who she is is a fantastic hook that makes you want to keep reading without stopping.

Hola a todos, querida comunidad de Hive Book Club, espero que estén super bien el día de hoy, en esta ocasión, vengo a traerles una nueva reseña, con mis opiniones.. después de escuchar a todo el mundo hablar maravillas de Los Orígenes por como mil años, dije “ya, a ver qué tal” y me puse a leer Clockwork Angel, ya sabía que era la precuela de Cazadores de Sombras, una saga con la que, la verdad, he tenido mis subidas y bajadas.. pero es que todo el mundo me decía y me repetía que esta trilogía era otra cosa, que aquí veíamos a Cassandra Clare en su prime, y la verdad, eso de que estuviera ambientado en el Londres victoriano me llamó un montón la atención. Así que nada, lo empecé y… ¡qué bueno que lo hice, de verdad!

Este libro tiene una vibra completamente diferente, me enganchó desde el minuto uno.. es que desde el principio, la ambientación es… uff, brutal.. estamos en Londres, en 1878, y es que casi puedes sentir la neblina en la cara y escuchar las carrozas pasando, ahí conocemos a nuestra prota, Tessa Gray, que acaba de llegar en barco desde Nueva York para vivir con su hermano después de que su tía muriera.. pero, obvio, desde el momento en que pisa tierra firme, todo se va al carajo. La secuestran de inmediato unas mujeres súper siniestras, que se hacen llamar las Hermanas Oscuras, y puf, su mundo se pone de cabeza, este inicio es súper oscuro, te da como una mala vibra, ¿saben? Porque no es que solo la encierran y ya.. la someten a un “entrenamiento” súper heavy para que despierte un poder que ni ella sabía que tenía.

Y es que resulta que Tessa puede cambiar de forma, o sea, convertirse en otra persona, viva o muerta, con solo tocar algo que les perteneció, esta habilidad es tan única que se vuelve el centro de toda la trama.. las escenas donde la torturan para que aprenda a usar su poder son intensas, de verdad que te rompen el corazón y conectas con ella al toque. Siento que aquí la forma de escribir de Clare está mucho más pulida.. a ver, en Cazadores de Sombras a veces sentía que nos tiraba toda la información de golpe, como si fuera una clase, pues aquí no.. aquí la construcción del mundo está metida en la historia de una forma mucho más orgánica, vas aprendiendo sobre los Cazadores de Sombras, los Subterráneos y la Clave a través de lo que los personajes hacen y dicen, no porque te lo suelten todo de una.

Y eso hace que te metas de lleno en la historia, es mucho más fluido.. eso sí, la trama al principio va a fuego lento, después de que rescatan a Tessa y llega al Instituto de Londres, el libro se toma su tiempito para presentarnos a todos los personajes y para sembrar el misterio principal: ¿quién es el Magíster, este tipo súper oscuro que quiere a Tessa para sus planes malvados? Y más importante todavía: ¿quién… o qué… es Tessa? El hecho de que ni ella misma sepa quién es, es un gancho buenísimo que te hace querer seguir leyendo sin parar.

And well, let's talk about the characters, because truly, they are the heart and soul of this book. Tessa is an incredible protagonist. She's one of those who loves books, she's intelligent, she's brave, but at the same time, she's completely overwhelmed by everything that's happening to her. You really feel her confusion and fear, but also how she's gradually becoming stronger. And then we have the two Shadowhunters from the Institute: Will Herondale and Jem Carstairs. Okay, Will is the classic bad boy, you know? The melancholic, sarcastic one who is gorgeous and knows it, and who pushes everyone away. If you've read The Mortal Instruments, he'll remind you a lot of Jace, but with a sharper, more painful edge. I'll be honest, I had a hard time liking him for most of the book.

He can be so cruel for no apparent reason, but then suddenly he gives you these hints of a super deep pain inside that makes you want to understand what's up with him. Then… there's Jem. Oh, Jem. He's the complete opposite of Will: he's sweet, kind, patient, and has such a tragic past that it truly breaks your heart. He's the one who treats Tessa with kindness and respect from the very first minute, and the connection they have feels super natural and beautiful. The dynamic between Will and Jem as parabatai—who are like battle brothers, closer than anything—is written in a beautiful way and is, without a doubt, one of the most powerful things in the whole book.

And the rest of the characters, from Charlotte, the ever-stressed head of the Institute, to Jessamine, who is super shallow and sometimes gets on your nerves, all feel very distinct and bring a lot of life to the world. There's one particular scene, not to spoil too much, that takes place at a vampire's party which… wow! Tessa has to use her power to impersonate someone else, and the tension is brutal. You really feel like you're there with her, with your heart in your throat, terrified of being discovered. The way Clare describes that feeling of being in someone else's skin—of feeling their memories and personality seeping into you—is simply fascinating. It really blows your mind.

Y bueno, hablemos de los personajes, porque de verdad, son el corazón, el alma de este libro, Tessa es una prota increíble.. es de las que aman los libros, es inteligente, es valiente, pero a la vez está completamente sobrepasada por todo lo que le está pasando, de verdad que sientes su confusión y su miedo, pero también cómo se va haciendo más fuerte. Y luego tenemos a los dos Cazadores de Sombras del Instituto: Will Herondale y Jem Carstairs.. a ver, Will es el clásico chico malo, ¿saben? El melancólico, el sarcástico, el que es guapísimo y lo sabe, y que aleja a todo el mundo, si ya leyeron Cazadores de Sombras, les va a recordar un montón a Jace, pero con un rollo como más afilado, más doloroso.. les soy sincero, me costó un montón que me cayera bien casi todo el libro.

Es que a veces es súper cruel sin razón aparente, pero de repente te da unas pistas de que hay un dolor súper profundo ahí dentro que te hace querer entender qué onda con él.. luego… está Jem. Ay, Jem. Es que es todo lo contrario a Will: es tierno, amable, paciente y tiene un pasado tan trágico que de verdad te rompe el corazón, él es el que trata a Tessa con cariño y respeto desde el minuto uno, y la conexión que tienen se siente súper natural y bonita.. la dinámica entre Will y Jem como parabatai —que son como hermanos de batalla, más unidos que nada— está escrita de una forma hermosa y es, sin duda, de lo más potente de todo el libro.

Y el resto de personajes, desde Charlotte, la jefa del Instituto que siempre está estresada, hasta Jessamine, que es súper superficial y a veces te saca de quicio, todos se sienten súper distintos y le dan mucha vida al mundo.. hay una escena en particular, para no spoilearles mucho, que es en una fiesta de un vampiro que… ¡uf! Tessa tiene que usar su poder para hacerse pasar por otra persona, y la tensión es brutal.. de verdad sientes que estás ahí con ella, con el corazón en la garganta, con un miedo terrible a que la descubran, la forma en que Clare te describe esa sensación de estar en la piel de otro —de sentir cómo sus recuerdos y su personalidad se te meten— es simplemente fascinante, de verdad que te vuela la cabeza.

Okay, if I had to find a "flaw," I'd say that the pacing in the middle of the book feels a bit uneven, and honestly, I saw some of the plot twists coming from a mile away. I mean, if you've been reading fantasy for a while, you can kind of smell where things are headed. You can really tell this is the first book in a trilogy, one of those that takes its time to lay all the groundwork, to get you to know the characters well, and to plant mysteries that, obviously, aren't going to be resolved right away. The book ends leaving you with more questions than answers, which on one hand is a little frustrating, but on the other hand, it leaves you dying to start the next one. So, who do I recommend this book to?

Obviously, if you're a fan of the Shadowhunters world, you have to read it, period. But I also highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fantasy, stories that focus heavily on characters, and a good mystery that simmers slowly. And hey, even if the original series didn't quite win you over, maybe this one will. The Victorian setting and the slightly more mature tone it has might be just what you were looking for. I give Clockwork Angel 4 out of 5 stars. It's not perfect, and it totally feels like the setup for everything that's to come, but what a great setup it is! The characters grab you, the atmosphere completely envelops you, and the main mysteries leave you thinking a lot. It got me hooked, big time. Well, I hope you liked this review, take care! Byebye!

A ver, si tuviera que buscarle algún “pero”, diría que el ritmo por la mitad del libro se siente un poco irregular, y algunos giros de la trama, la verdad, los vi venir de lejos.. o sea, si ya llevas un rato leyendo fantasía, como que te hueles por dónde van los tiros, se nota mucho que es el primer libro de una trilogía, de esos que se toman su tiempo para poner todas las bases, para que conozcas bien a los personajes y para plantar misterios que, obvio, no se van a resolver ya mismo. El libro termina dejándote con más preguntas que respuestas, lo que por un lado te frustra un poco, pero por otro te deja con unas ganas locas de empezar el que sigue.. entonces, ¿a quién le recomiendo este libro?

Obviamente, si eres fan del mundo de Cazadores de Sombras, tienes que leerlo sí o sí, pero también se lo súper recomiendo a cualquiera que le guste la fantasía histórica, las historias que se centran mucho en los personajes y un buen misterio que se va cocinando a fuego lento.. ojo, incluso si la saga original no te terminó de convencer, chance y esta sí.. la ambientación victoriana y el tono un poco más maduro que tiene, puede que sea justo lo que andabas buscando. Yo le doy a Ángel Mecánico unas 4/5 estrellas, no es perfecto, y se siente totalmente como la preparación para todo lo que se viene después, pero ¡qué buena preparación! Los personajes te atrapan, la atmósfera te envuelve por completo y los misterios principales te dejan pensando un montón, a mí me enganchó durísimo.. y bueno, espero que les haya gustado esta reseña, cuidense mucho!
