In the 12th century, long before the age of satellites and tourist photographs, a traveler named Abd al-Latif al-Baghdadi journeyed through Egypt. He was a physician, philosopher, and historian. His observations were detailed and clinical, not the romantic musings of a mystic. In his writings, he described four pyramids on the Giza Plateau.
Centuries later, Frederic Norden, a Danish naval captain and explorer, visited Egypt in 1737. His documentation of the region is precise, accompanied by sketches and detailed notes. In his book, Voyage d’Egypte et de Nubie, Norden mentions and draws four pyramids at Giza, not three.
According to Norden, the fourth pyramid stood to the west of the other three, and unlike the others, was constructed of “black stone, harder than granite.” He described it as without casing stones, smaller than the others, and peculiar in appearance. But still, unmistakably a pyramid.
His sketches match his words. There it is, an unfamiliar shape on the plateau, dark and shadowed, standing apart.
The Vanishing Monument: Where Did It Go?
Modern archaeology denies its existence. The satellite maps show three. The tour guides speak of three. The Egyptologists draw their timelines around three. So, what happened to the fourth?
Some suggest it was destroyed, possibly dismantled stone by stone during one of Egypt’s many periods of conquest and rebuilding. Others believe it was buried beneath layers of desert, covered over by either nature or by design. And then some believe it never existed in the material sense, because it was never meant to.
But Norden’s accounts were clear. His sketches were exact. They showed something that was there in the 18th century. Could it have been erased from history in the short span of a few hundred years? Or… was it always hidden?
Black Pyramid: More Than Stone
The color black in ancient Egypt was not sinister. It was powerful. It represented the womb of the earth, the fertile soil of the Nile, rebirth, regeneration, and the sacred. In the afterlife texts, the Duat, the underworld, was a realm of darkness, mystery, and transformation. Osiris, lord of the dead, was the black god, ruling from a hidden world beneath.

An entrance to the unseen. Its positioning, westernmost, aligns with the Egyptian association of the West as the land of the dead, where the sun sets and the soul journeys. If it were real, the black pyramid may not have been built by the same hands, or for the same reasons, as its siblings. It may not have been built for pharaohs at all.
Hidden Alignments and Forgotten Knowledge
Ancient structures speak through alignment. The three pyramids are famously aligned with Orion’s Belt, stars connected to Osiris. But if a fourth pyramid once existed, did it belong to a different alignment? Did it mirror a hidden constellation, one now lost or forbidden?
Some researchers point to the binary star Sirius, the star of Isis, Osiris’ consort. Sirius was associated with resurrection and cycles of life. Could the black pyramid have mirrored this otherworldly light?
Others speculate that it was tied to underground chambers, hidden networks beneath the Giza Plateau that modern archaeologists refuse to fully explore or acknowledge. Tales from Arab historians, mystics, and ancient texts speak of vast libraries and knowledge chambers under the sands, records from Atlantis, or even older civilizations, protected by “those who came before.” Was the black pyramid the key to this underworld?
Guardians of the Secret
Why, then, is it not spoken of? Why does modern academia shun the accounts of Norden and others?
Perhaps because the implications are too great. If a fourth pyramid once stood at Giza, one that does not fit into the accepted narrative of Egyptian dynastic history, it suggests a pre-dynastic builder. Something older. Something more advanced. It challenges everything we’ve come to accept about the timeline of civilization.
And such challenges are dangerous. They upset the linear, tidy stories taught in classrooms. They invite questions that have no comfortable answers. And so, the evidence is dismissed, or worse, buried.
The Mystery Remains
The black pyramid of Giza, whether physically lost or spiritually hidden, casts a long shadow across the sands of time. Was it a physical monument, now lost to history? A symbolic structure meant only for the initiates? A portal, not of stone, but of energy? Whatever it was, if it was, it changes everything.
