The Watchers, and the Ancient War of Heaven

Long before modern religion took form, ancient texts, such as the Book of Enoch, spoke of powerful beings called the Watchers—celestial angels sent to guide humanity. Led by Semjaza, a high-ranking Watcher, a group of 200 descended to Earth. They broke divine law by taking human wives and teaching forbidden knowledge—alchemy, astrology, weapons, and magic. Their children, the Nephilim, were giants, feared by both gods and men. This rebellion echoed an even older conflict—one found in Sumerian myths. Enki and Enlil, two Anunnaki brothers, were often at odds. Enki, the creator and friend of mankind, wanted to enlighten and protect humans. Enlil, a strict lawgiver, sought to control or even destroy them when they became too advanced.

Just like Enlil opposed Enki’s help to humanity, the heavenly council in the Enochian myth declared war on Semjaza and the fallen Watchers. Was this the same ancient power struggle, seen through different lenses?

Was Semjaza following in Enki’s footsteps—bringing knowledge to humans, and being punished for it? The war of the Watchers may not just be myth. It could be one of many retellings of a cosmic civil war—between those who wished to enlighten humanity… and those who wished to keep us in the dark.
